Hello,
I was wondering if anyone's school allows you to not take an AP test even if they are taking the AP class. I ask this because I am currently taking two AP classes and apparently it is against my school's policy to allow students to not take the test. I do not feel that I am ready for the test and would rather spend the money on something else(since my parents do not have a lot of money).

My school doesn't force people to take the test if they're in the class. Its the students decision. The school isn't the one paying the money.

Yeah, it's the student's decision whether to take the test or not. For example, I'm in the AP Spanish Literature class, but I'm not taking the exam.

you should consult with your concellors.. because, what's the worse that can happen? you can always just not pay the money (as the post #2 suggested)

At my school, you can opt to not take the AP exam, but you'll have to take a second semester final examination.

Most AP courses (except languages/English) require a student to take the corresponding AP test. There is such strong pressure in the other classes that all enrolled take the exam anyway.

At my school, you have the option. We have fairly decent test participation. Last year my entire AP World class, about 20 students, took the test. This year most of my AP US class is, but only about half of the 14 or so in my Calc class are, i am not. I'm not prepared and dont want to pay the money to get a 1 or 2. Maybe if my school put up the money for the tests, does anybody have the test paid for by the district?

My AP Physics B exam will be free because of my parents' income. I never signed up for the exam. Our school signed up for us. So I guess I have to start studying. But here is my question. If I get below a 3, will colleges see this?

yes. they will. frankly, they won't care. at least they'll think, "he took the damn thing"

taking AP Tests can only help you...... its just that a 5 helps more than a 2.

Can I decide not to show colleges my score?

You self-report them, so I guess you can leave them out. However, what matters most is your grade in the class. If you get a 2 on the test but a 90 in the class, it will look like you are trying hard in your environment but your school's program in that subject is weak. On the other hand, if you get a 70 in the class but a 5 on the test it will either show that you have a super-competitive, deflated school or you don't try hard in school and are a really good test taker. The last scenarios are if you do bad on both, or good on both, in which there is a direct correlation between your effort and your grades.

My teacher will award up to 10 points on our final grade if we take the test!

Then I would definitely take it. Go for it!

I disagree that "most schools make you take the test," that is completly wrong. If the student has to pay they cannot make you take the test. Two of my teachers said, " I will be extremely dissapointed if you do nto take the test, then glared evily at me." The other said, " It is completely your decision."

Frankly, if you think you are going to fail it, tell them. If you take it an fail, it hurts their percent pass average. They don't like that. Then tell them you will only take it if they pay for it. See what they think then.

at my school, taking the test is required and if you don't, then you fail the class

wow, i've never heard of someone being forced to take the test
it's optional in all my classes. i mean most of us do, but there is a girl in one of my classes who has had a rough year (non-school related) so she didn't take it b/c she was not ready.

In my school you can opt to not take the AP exam, but then you don't get credit for taking an AP level class. For example, if you took AP world but didn't take the AP, you'd get credit for a regular world history class.

Well I go to a Catholic school so they assume that we have money and say that if we don't pay for it they will add it to the tuition and if I choose not to take the test then I will get an incomplete in the class and not graduate. So i guess i'm taking it.

At my school, if you maintain a C average in the class you get the test paid for by the school. a D or an F grade says u have to pay for it urself.
