So I'm planning on taking the AWPE so I can get out of Eng Comp 3 and I just wanted some advice on what the test is like. Is it like the SAT writing or critical reading sections? Is it easy or difficult? Do you have to write a bunch of essays or is there reading comprehension involved? Anything else? Any advice is appreciated!

I believe the exam that you are referring to is actually called the “English Composition 3 Proficiency Exam.” It is exactly the same as the AWPE, except that it requires an SAT Writing score of 720 or higher to take, it’s free, it’s graded at UCLA by Writing Programs, and it has a higher threshold for passing than the AWPE does.

In my first year, when I inquired about it, I was told by the Writing Programs director that the exam is probably the hardest way to bypass Writing I/English Comp 3. But I took it anyway, and I passed it. All that you do for the exam is read a lengthy passage, then plan and write an essay responding to some question about the passage. There are no multiple choice or short answer questions. It’s definitely longer and more involved than the essay on the SAT.

The examples on this site should give you a good feel for it: [Entry Level Writing Requirement](<a href=“Entry Level Writing Requirement | University of California”>Entry Level Writing Requirement | University of California)

Thank you that is immensely helpful! But I actually have to pay… $110!
