Are you able to use your own money to pay at on campus fast food places? For example, the 20 meals / week meal plan gives you a lot less Dining Dollars than the 9 meal / week plan so if I run out of Dining Dollars in a week can I use my own money? Also, which plan would you recommend?

Yes, you can use your own money for the on campus food places. Maybe not the dining hall, but the food court, yes. Also, you can have a Cane Express account ([Cane Express Account | DCIE | University of Miami](Division of Continuing & International Education | University of Miami)) which is linked to your Cane Card and is pretty much a debit card for on-campus stores like the food court, the bookstore, vending machines, etc. You or your parents can add to your Cane Express balance online.

The first one has more of the nuts and bolts about the 2 plans you have to choose from (either 14 or 20) - the second one has some more opinions about the quality of the food.

My D initially signed up for the 20 meals, but switched to 14 for the Spring semester - unless you are really into eating, you won’t use the 20 meals. There was a fee to do the swap (I think it was $60 or something close to that). I have heard that the 14 meal plan is by FAR the most popular with incoming freshman.

My son originally signed up for 14 meals. Changed to 20 within the first few weeks. (No fee to trade “up” only to reduce number). Really used it the first semester. Not so much this semester, based on class schedule. Since he is by the food court at lunch time tends to go there regularly. The 20 meal plan dining dollars were used up very quickly, and now he uses his debit card there (not Cane Express). It adds up very fast. And the “healthy” choices get old fast.

Did he not like the food court options or…? Just curious, because most of the anecdotes on here are of students downsizing their plan as opposed to actually upping the meal plan.

My S has been on the 20 plan for 3 years and planning to his 4th. If your child eats 3 meals a day, then it is worth it. Only about 100 dollar difference in the 2 plans. He doesn’t prefer the food court, feelings the dininghall has healthier choices and varied choices.
