I go to a highly competitive high school that has a great track record getting kids into Rochester, and those kids have done really well there. I have good and unusual EC's with a clear pattern of interests. (community service with focus on helping disabled people)

My school doesn't weight grades. I will have a 3.4ish GPA by the end of this year. My GPA has gone up every year. My school offers APs mostly in math and science, which I don't like and haven't taken, but I have taken extra English and History classes and have been in honors language and history classes.

I would guess my essays and recommendations will be very good.

My SATs are 1210/1600 or 1880/2400. I don't know how I did on the ACTs.

SATs are a little low. GPA unweighted is ok. depending on your course load. I would also say low reach dpeending on what exactly your english course entails. An interview would be a big help

hey,
you have almost identical numbers as I do. My unweighted gpa is like 3.4-3.5ish and weighted 4.3ish. SATs are 1210/1600, 1810/2400. good community service, activities, etc. if you wanna see my resume, im me or pm me, and i got in this year early decision 2. i would probably have gotten in or waitlisted if i applied regular. more than the interview, make sure your essays show how enthusiastic you are about rochester, etc.

you still have part of your senior year to up the gpa, although it is not at all horrible for a "highly competitive HS." Have you considered retaking the SATs?...you should do it if you've only taken them once and are sure that you can increase your score on at least one of the sections. On a lighter note, UR doesn't weigh SATs as much as some think. One of the ad people that I personally know has told me that they were actually thinking of dropping the SATs as a requirement a few years back.

That said, you should focus your energy on even more EC's (explain what is unusual about them in your essays...they like that kind of stuff.) You should also DEFINITELY interview on campus..way way better that way...and you get to see the school that way, if you haven't already. Start thinking about what you can write/talk about that makes you a good addition to the school (diversity; differences; uniqueness...) Probably shouldn't focus too much on academics in the essay as they will see that on your transcipts/resume (by the way, make a resume if you haven't done so already to give to them at the interview in addition to your transcript.)

To sum it up, you shouldn't worry about your "numbers" too much as UR is a school that looks at applicants from a more holistic perspective. Rather, try to focus on things that make you a great/unique person outside of school (however, don't forget to keep the grades up too.)

I think that you have a fair shot at the college, given that many people from your schol go there and do well there and that you have decent EC's and fairly good numbers.

Best of luck to you.

Disclaimer lol: Notice that nowhere did I mention that you will actually get into the school....just that you have a good chance...I don't mean to be an ass****

there is NO WAY one can judge whether one test score is good for any school. what you need is to paint a complete picture of yourself. to a degree, an average sat/act score can be offset by stellar gpa and EC's but not vise versa. Hope this helped.

well said jersh...my scores did not fit my gpa which was much higher than expected with test scores...but if you want an example, my overall act was 26, but i did have one really good math score of like 34 or something...but, make sure you make your essays really passionate...i liked the location, so i focused mine on the location-well, i disregarded the weather lol...but it actually is nice whenever it's not winter...

Thanks. Suman, it's interesting what you wrote because I took the ACTs and have two spectacular scores and the rest soso. I'm interviewing this fall, so I'll see what else I find to love about the place. So far, I really like the kids I know who go there and the cluster system (I have definite interests and definite things I want to avoid.) I'll see what else.
