Hi, I am going to be ED’ing to NYU Stern this year, and another girl from my school has a very low GPA (3.0) but has the best extracurriculars I have ever seen (her mom owns a huge restaurant and she made a business plan for them that got them millions in funding, captain and 2nd place of Columbia’s model entrepreneur competition, filed a patent for an invention,Varsity golf captain, national fencing team AND wants to go in the same major as me (management).
As I know that program slots are really low and many schools want to limit the number of people they get from one school, how badly would this hurt my chances (high GPA but much weaker extracurriculars)?
Thanks, just a little freaked out. Do you know if my choice of management will help / hurt my chances given that Stern’s finance is known to be renown and really competitive?
On the NYU web site, I see that NYU Stern recently had 12,435 applicants (for freshmen entering for the class of 2022).
I would not worry about any one applicant, regardless of whether they were from your high school or not. You might both be accepted. You might both be rejected. Your GPA may very well be a big part of what gets you in. You cannot accurately predict the result.
You should go ahead and apply, but you also need to apply to safety and match schools.
I don’t think your choice of major within the business school will matter as I believe you are free to change majors within the b-school once you get on campus.
Stern is a tough admit. As I said before, apply and give it your best shot. But also be sure your application list also includes match and safety schools that appear affordable (run net price calculators) and that you would be excited to attend.
Don’t worry about other applicants. A few people from my daughter’s school got accepted and a few got rejected, and a couple of the rejected ones had much better applications on paper than my daughter. ED does help for NYU too. Just submit the best application you can, and take a lot of care on your “why NYU “ essay. Good luck!
