another question for Dan

My daughter is very interested in Tufts and just received her ACT scores. She scored a 33 on the ACT (34E, 33M, 33R, 30S) with a 9 on the essay. However, she scored an 11 on the SAT essay with 2200 on the SAT (680CR, 730M, 790W). Should she submit both tests or just the ACT?

I know I’m not an admissions officer, but I would submit both. A 790 SAT writing score and an essay score of 11 will outweigh a 9 on the ACT, so that won’t stop her from getting in. It would be good for admissions officers to see both scores - they’re similar and both prove she’s a strong student.

Thank you!

Her ACT score is better, so you could certainly submit just that, but I suspect that the Tufts AdCom will look at everything and then focus on her best scores anyway, so that giving them everything will not hurt her at all. Keep in mind, though, that the writing score is really not of consequence; the focus on the SAT will be on the M and CR scores.

My D1 has similar scores: overall, ACT better than SAT, but perfect writing scores on the SAT. The general Parent Forum advice was to just go with the ACT scores, but I’m looking forward to seeing Dan’s response.

The writing that really counts is what she has to say on the application essays. Both sets of scores are fine. I’d send both and not worry.

(S2 had a 790 on Writing twice – 74 MC/12 essay, 80 MC/9 essay.) Have no idea which one schools cared more about, since we sent both.

There is no harm in submitting everything. This is a question that comes up a lot, and I can state without equivocation that there is no negative to submitting all testing, should you choose to do so.

What if there is more of a discrepancy between the ACT scores and the SAT scores? In the op example, both scores were excellent. What if someone does significantly better on the ACT than on the SAT? Is she required to submit both, or can she just submit the ACT?

Also, my understanding from the Tufts website is that Tufts genuinely doesn’t care whether students take the ACT or the SAT. In our East Coast high school, however, there seems to be a distinct bias towards the SAT – our school isn’t even a test site for the ACT. Am I correct in understanding that it really doesn’t matter to Tufts which test a student submits? Thanks!
