Another Surprised Deferral

I just got deferred today, 33 ACT and 2190 SAT,4.0 UW GPA along w/ numerous high leadership positions (President of Phi Theta Kappa through dual enrollment and founded my school's debate team). Class rank:1/78. I wrote in the "Why Tulane" section about my attraction to it's commitment to volunteerism and how the Social Policy coordinate major was perfect for me. I'm really upset, Tulane was the most selective school I applied to. Do only EA accepted applicants get the high amount of merit aid?

I am extremely surprised over this news, given two (actually 3 if you include rank) of the major components of your application are very strong. Don’t give up the fight and, also, keep your chin up!

See my other posting meg. But to your question at the end, no absolutely not. You will be just as highly considered for the merit scholarships. In fact, you have the stats to be in the running for the DHS. It doesn’t matter that you are in the RD pool now. That is a totally administrative matter, although it doesn’t feel like it to you. Time is EXTREMELY short, but if you can pull a DHS application together, do it. You can also apply for the Community Service Scholarship, the application for which is not due until January sometime, the 15th I think. The CSS can be added to any merit scholarship you receive.

You are definitely Tulane material. Just let them know that by pushing on.

did you answer why tulane??? if you didnt i would write and send it in to the admissions office. or if you only wrote a generic sentence or two then write a longer one.

they might not know that you were interested.

i had similar stats and i wrote a two paragraph why tulane that beyond the academics and focused on its mission statement

Wow - that’s kind of freaky. You have the same stats as my daughter, except that she is 4/300. My D also has tons of ECs, leadership, & service, and she gave a similar answer to the Why Tulane question. She was also deferred. I have no guesses or words of wisdom about what might or might not be going on in the admissions office, but know that people are rooting for you! I am crossing my fingers for you!

I think they may be doing yield protection. Your stats are at their 75% level, so it is hard to understand the deferral.

If you can submit a scholarship application, by all means do so because it shows commitment to come.

I personally doubt this is about yield protection. As FC has said, this would be a dramatic change in approach. More likely other factors involved.

Let’s look at it this way. Suppose they did everything the same as last year, and they ended up with 1630 again. Let’s also take it as a given this would represent an impossible situation for Tulane if they get 90-92% retention again. Since they have no reason to suspect retention will decrease, acknowledging that they have continued to put programs in place to achieve just the opposite, they really do have to get the class down to 1400. So now let’s also assume that for the first month or so of this admissions cycle, they in fact were doing things the same as the last few years, as it seems they were since the very early people were treated exactly like before, from what we can see on here. It would then only be logical that someone said “we have to put the brakes on or we will be in deep doo-doo”. So they did. Now my scenario most likely isn’t exactly what happened, because it doesn’t explain why they wouldn’t have taken a somewhat different approach from the start, as I would have thought they might. But I bet it is rather close. It just seems to be the most explanatory hypothesis, no?

agree with FC including the “why wouldn’t they have done that from the start?”…that’s the fishy part…

I just wonder if there is some factor of “ugh, enough apps already” in play here…“if we defer someone who really wants to be here, they will let us know”…

also, there is a STRONG possibility that the merit $$ already put out there hit a critical mass; the kids on this deferral thread would DEFINITELY be eligible for merit if they are ultimately accepted (and may even get it if alot of the $$ already put out there is turned down)…

Is it possible they were deferred so that merit $$ can free up to be offered later on?

Just a thought…since Tulane couldn’t accept them now and offer merit $$ in the spring (well, they could but most high stats kids will have moved on by then…)

It still comes down to the fact that if any of these high stats kids really want Tulane, they have to let admissions know…hopefully, there will be $$ there available when they do…

As far as the $$, to the best of my knowledge Tulane is in better shape financially than any at time since Katrina. So I don’t think that is what is driving the behavior, but I certainly cannot be 100% sure.

Well, it may be identical to last year. We are only seeing a minute sample. It just may be that the higher stat deferrals just happen to be CC posters, and the deferrals last year were not. This is my vote.

Of course you could be right idad. This is not scientific in the least. But, I have to believe if this many students with these kinds of stats were getting deferred last year, we would have heard about it. This pattern is new to me, anyway.
