Deferred EA should i even bother

I was deferred from EA and was above on the stats and I know thats not all they look at, but I don't think I qualify for as many scholarships anymore and I am wondering if I should still try to get in by contacting admissions etc, b/c i can't afford tulane w/o scholarships

As long as you applied Early Action you are still able to apply for all of the full tuition scholarships and you shouldn’t assume because you were deferred that you wouldn’t be considered. I say that not knowing anything about your stats or resume. You should contact your admissions counselor to get some idea of why you were deferred and let them know that you are applying for the Deans, Paul Tulane, etc. The effort alone indicates interest.

kjgirl - Your assumption that you would get less in scholarships because of being deferred is incorrect. Last year many people that got deferred and then got in during the spring still got generous scholarships. Also, don’t forget that when you apply for need based aid, much of that aid can be in grants instead of loans.

So just keep moving forward by letting Tulane know you really want to attend, and why. I wouldn’t focus on the fact that Tulane is unaffordable for you without scholarships. That will be apparent from your FAFSA filing. If you get in, you will get merit scholarships based on just that, your accomplishments and record.

FC- I’m a little unclear on what you mean by “just that” (i.e. FAFSA filing?) I thought merit scholarships are need based blind? Do you mean grant?

Sorry, I shouldn’t post half-asleep, lol. I meant to separate the two points. The fact that they would need financial aid to attend Tulane would be apparent from the filing, and that need would most likely take the form of grants, loans and maybe work-study. The merit aid would be based on accomplishments and fit for Tulane, and I think largely regardless of being accepted in the spring or in the fall.

Thanks FC. When I saw the time of your post that crossed my mind. Also trying out the quote function here. Pretty spiffy

Thanks for the replies. I’m a little less discouraged now, but by being unaffordable I meant I am well off but to where I won’t get much federal aid but i still can’t really afford a school like Tulane

Lots of people are in that situation. You should absolutely file the need aid forms anyway, and also stay in touch with your admissions person and let them know that you want to attend Tulane. If your stats are good and they realize you really want Tulane, merit money will probably be awarded.

I can’t see why you wouldn’t try. You might get in, and if you do nothing you almost surely won’t.
