Wow I am asking a lot of questions on this forum :)

The admissions website says I need 4 years of social studies or history. I didn’t take history freshman year, but took AP World History sophomore year, AP US History junior year and will take AP Economics and AP American Government senior year (both are only one semester courses). I come from California, as some of you might know, and in my school district, honors students don’t usually take history during their first year in high school. Will I be at a disadvantage in terms of admission?

Also, I took Algebra I and Geometry in Jr. High, so the only courses I have on my HS transcript are Alg II and beyond. Is that OK?

Totally ok about the math…many kids are in that same situation.

I don’t think the social studies will be an issue, but I would contact your area admissions rep to be sure.

I highly doubt that not having 4 “years” of history will be an issue as there are many states where hs freshmen don’t take a history class. With 4 AP History/Social Studies courses in hs, you should fine. You are advanced enough in math that the requirements should not be an issue.

Alabama, like all schools, will look at what the graduation requirements are at your school and make its determination on that. For example, many Alabama high school offer just two years of a foreign language. Should that keep an Alabama grad out of an OOS college that requires three or more years? No. I cannot see the social studies being held against you, especially since you took or will take higher level classes.

Do you mean that Economics and Government will count as one “unit” each, irrespective of the length of the course?

I don’t think there are any other universities that have such a strong social sciences requirement for applicants…I wonder what kids in AL take for history their freshman year…a state history course maybe?

I’m in the same boat. Honors kids at my school don’t take history/govt sophomore year…which sucked for me because history/social studies is my favorite subject in school.

Like momreads, I was more saying that you have/will take some very rigorous history/social studies classes based on what is offered at your hs. The fact that some schools teach economics and government as whole-year courses does make it look like you took the equivalent of 4 years of classes in the subjects. I applied having taken 1 non-honors world history class, APUSH, and 2 college quarters of economics (I didn’t take any history/social studies classes my senior year) and I was still accepted to UA.

Considering the parts of your academic record that I’m aware of, I’m quite sure that you will be accepted. When we start looking at applicants eligible for merit scholarships and programs like CBHP and Fellows, admission to UA is usually something we more of expect, barring any major irregularities such as academic dishonesty, felony convictions, etc. Call UA tomorrow and get official confirmation that having 3 years of social studies is sufficient and then rest assured that you will be fine with only 3 “years.”

Thank you SEA_tide! Tomorrow is Sat, so I can’t call (or perhaps I can?) but I’ve already sent them an email.

me too! although i really want to get into something like CS or engineering…

Alabama has a 4x4 core curriculum, meaning high school students are required to take four years of each of the four core subjects (English, math, science and social studies) in order to graduate, so UA’s requirements are probably based on that.

I remember taking “World” history in 9th grade (but in reality, it was mostly European history).

siglio - don’t worry, S also from CA didn’t have “history” freshman year (health & cultural geography, only MUN kids had history as freshmen) plus senior year he opted for macroecon. not history/govt. Did not affect his acceptance or scholarship. I think it may be a factor if you opted for non-college prep electives.

I only took 3 years total of history/social science in high school and I was accepted to UA, so you should be fine.

I didn’t take history as a freshmen, but took AP Euro (10th grade), AP US (11th grade) and IB History of the Americas (12th grade) and got in.

In Virginia, we have various diplomas. One is an advanced that requires four units of social studies. Another is a standard that requires just three (you do not take a social studies class as a sophomore). I know several students who went on the standard track and still got into college. So I would not worry about your social studies situation.

Guidance counselors also tell students that they need a math class their senior year or they may not get into a college. Well, my son completed all his math that was offered (through BC calculus and AP stat) by the end of his junior year. He’s National Merit at Alabama.

*I wonder what kids in AL take for history their freshman year…a state history course maybe? *

My kids went to an Alabama Catholic high school. They took…

Frosh…World History (typical for frosh in Alabama) School recently added APWorld for frosh.

Soph…AP US History (regular US History is an option)

Junior…AP Euro (World History II is an option)

Senior…AP Gov (I don’t remember what the option is for non-AP kids).

Alabama has a 4x4 core curriculum, meaning high school students are required to take four years of each of the four core subjects (English, math, science and social studies) in order to graduate,

True…LOL…my kids had the 4X5 curriculum…English, math, science, social studies, and religion.

The thing about my school is that you CAN take history freshman year, but everyone who takes AP World pretty much doesn’t. I wonder how the university will regard that

Siglio, you could take AP Geography as a freshman at my school, and I didn’t. It wasn’t a big deal, clearly.

Siglio…don’t worry about it.

Bama isn’t going to penalize you for not taking a class that your state didn’t require. It’s not like you took some kind of slacker currriculum

they said that foreign language can count as a social science, so i guess im set :)

Great!

I figured it wouldn’t be an issue. Bama likes OOS students so they aren’t going to try to keep any out over such a minor issue.
