Answering ALL Questions Related to Rutgers Pharmacy

Thank you very much for your response. I would also love to hear other people’s input, and if you could answer any more of my questions, that would be great as well.

Thanks!

RU doesn’t have early decision. It has rolling admissions – meaning that the earlier you apply, the better. Definitely apply as early as you can. Start looking out for the app in September.

Your SAT scores look okay, but the CR score could improve. Your math and writing scores are decent though – just concentrate on CR if you retake the SAT. 2000+ is a nice SAT score to have, but there are definitely people who have gotten into RU Pharmacy with lower than that. No idea what the average is, sorry. You don’t have to delay your app to wait for the SAT score.
As for your question about “divided” SAT scores – they will consider your best score from each test session, so the answer to that is yes.

It’s hard to guess financial aid, since we don’t know your exact situation (and even if we did, financial aid can be weird). Since you’re in the top 10% though, I think that you should get some sort of academic scholarship. Raising your SAT score could definitely help with this too.

You can apply online…I can’t remember what the app fee for RU was. The essay is indeed optional, but if you want to get in that badly, write it anyway. It adds some more personality to the app, at least….so the app isn’t all just numbers.

There are pharmacy scholarships available for the professional students. Try looking at outside scholarships – they can really help.

As for programs at RU Pharmacy – they are working on implementing PharmD/MBA and PharmD/PhD dual degree programs (the PharmD/PhD one would take 9 years total, which is a pretty nice deal if you know that you want a PhD. Obviously it wouldn’t be easy to get into this though). The honors program for pharmacy is different than the one for, say, SAS – the earliest that you can apply to get in is spring semester of PP2 year. It’s a research program – you can find more information at pharmacy.rutgers.edu.

I’d say to work hard in AP Bio and make sure that you get a good score on the AP exam so that you don’t have to take general bio at RU. A lot of people either declare it as being their smartest academic decision of the year or wish that they’d done it.
As for the 8 credit cap – you can look at the pharmacy curriculum at pharmacy.rutgers.edu to see how many credits each class is worth. If you AP out of gen bio, that would be your 8 credits (4 credits each for Gen Bio I and II). The same goes for gen chem. On the other hand, let’s say you use your US History AP credits – that would apply for a humanities class, which is 3 credits. You’d have five credits left to use over….calc could be another class that you AP out of, although that’s generally not recommended because it’s such an easy class here. With your AP credits, I’d say to go for either AP Bio or AP Chem (probably use bio credits….most people do that). I don’t think that a 3 on an AP exam is sufficient.
Don’t worry about the SAT IIs – RU doesn’t even look at them.

A few Bs after you get accepted to college doesn’t matter at all.

I hope that helped!

Basically all I want to know is…what at my chances?

GPA 4.32 Weighted, 3.87 unweighted.
SAT: 1480 Crit Reading + Math
APs: currently taking AP bio, APUSH, AP psych, AP human geo, and AP language and comp.

Also, do I do pre-pharmacy first and then apply to the actual pharmacy school?

Alright thanks for the info greatly! I will work my butt off to improve my CR score before I take it in October.

So I can apply in September and take the SAT in October? How does that work? Will CollegeBoard just send it automatically to them? And if they do, isn’t there a chance they can make a decision on choosing me or not without even looking at the new score?

Can I get out of the Gen Bio I & II with a 4 on the AP Exam? (I will work my butt off and am hoping to use the credits for that class. There’s a reason almost everyone on here is doing it)

I will just worry about the financial aid stuff depending if I get in or not.

Applications
: Can I get the waiver from my school or whatever? Do I talk to my counselour? Or is there a form on the same site as the application?
: How long does a typical application take?
: And which parts are the “difficult” ones (stuff that isn’t name, date of birth, etc.) - From the top of my head, I think extracurriculars, essay, and that’s pretty much about it (newbie to apps).

: ON A SEPARATE NOTE, I was planning on taking the October SAT I, which I may have mentioned already. Do I speak to my counselour on the possible fee waiver?

Any idea on how much it costs in total to attend Rutgers Pharmacy? If I’m instate?

I saw people talking about PQAT’s and stuff… Do I have to worry about that?

Pretty important as well, but you only hinted at it. What are my chances in your opinion? Tell me what my chances are with the 2020 and also with about a ~700-ish CR score?
: Also, this is very important. Besides boosting my SAT I score, what else should I be working on to improve my chances? Besides maintaining good grades in my classes?

: Also very important!!! What SAT I book do you guys recommend for me? I’m looking for one that is easily purchaseable on Amazon or Barnes & Nobles I guess. I suppose I am looking for practice test w/ answers and explanations. Probably at least 4 or more practice tests. I don’t know if I need the notes too but most of them come with it I would imagine.

 • What SAT books do you guys like?! And remember that CR is one of the main points I need to work on!

You answered most of my questions and thank you VERY much! Anyone else with any more input is GREATLY appreciated! (See above post as well!!)

This us the only question I can answer for you, hahaha.
Okay so for practice tests, USE THE COLLEGE BOARD BOOK. they’re the only one with REAL SAT questions. :D

i really want to get into Rutgers pharm too! if i retake the SAT in October but send in the rest of my app in September, will Rutgers not review it until my Oct. SAT score comes in?

and is an essay required for Rutgers pharm?

^natalie9494

Don’t like the CollegeBoard book. Has more than the 4 or 5 tests I need, but no explanations…

^sporty04

I don’t think you read, but the essay is not required. However, it seems to be recommended, not by the college, but in general, because it adds more depth to your application.

I am also wondering about the SAT thing, as it is in my above post

Anyone who can help out would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Natalie: No, just apply for the pharmacy program on the app. The first two years are preprofessional (= pre-pharmacy). If you make it, you go straight into the professional years.

Jyxl: Just to transition from above – if you get into the 6 year program, you don’t have to take the PCATs at all. (If you don’t and decide to transfer in though, you will).

I’m not too sure about a score of 4…it might be that you can get out of Gen Bio I, but not II? Don’t take my word for it though; I’m really not too sure (I just think that I remember that being the situation for a friend who only got a 4 on AP Chem). Just aim for a 5…it’s not that hard of a test.

During the SAT, indicate that you want the score to be sent to RU. I’d honestly just send the app in as early as possible, since that will probably maximize your chances. If you’re nervous about that and want to wait for the SAT scores to come in though, October is still a good time to send in the app (I feel like there’s another reason why it’s not a big deal to send the new SAT scores after the app, but it’s funny how much I’ve forgotten about the whole process after 2 years). I’ve also completely forgotten how the waiver works – it’s best to ask your counselor about that.

I feel like RU had a pretty simple app (if perhaps slightly annoying, because it wasn’t as smooth as CommonApp). Just put down your info, which three schools you want to apply to, your ECs, and then the essay.

Tuition is somewhere around the vicinity of $23,000 total, I think. It gets more expensive during the last two years.

All of my SAT books are at home and I generally don’t remember what they were. I had a Barron’s and a Kaplan book (books with detailed solutions instead of just an answer key are nice). There’s really not much difference between them. Just get a bunch of books and start drilling everything in. With CR, I guess that all you can do is practice with those types of questions. Sorry that I don’t have much more to say than that – CR, for some reason, came effortlessly to me, so I actually never even looked at that section in the practice book. My problem was idiotic errors in math that ended up needlessly costing me a lot of points, so I just did as many math problems as I could to try to cut down on the tendency for careless mistakes.

To be honest, I tend to skirt around “chance me” questions because I feel like people’s stats are all over the board, and it’s not like I’m an adcom/I don’t know how they think. In terms of #s, you look fine, but people with good stats have been rejected before while some people with lower stats get accepted, you know?

Besides that, perhaps work something into your essay about why you’re interested in pharmacy. I don’t know if that would work with them or not, but it couldn’t hurt. I did something similar.

So I am currently a freshmen at the school of engineer at RU, I was wondering how hard would it be to switch to Pharmacy? I did not get into pharmacy for freshmen year, but what would be some requirements? I have done all of the first year curriculum already besides the pharmacy convocation and one humanities elective and the extra english class. I was hoping to AP out of bio and chem but i heard you can only AP out of one for pharmacy? Help would be appreciated, thank you!

for Jyxl41: I’d chill at the moment, as you seem to be obsessing a bit much about your chances, etc…but

do a serious talk with your parents about financing, as that is your first step in wondering about financial aid. Since you are basically going in on a career-track program, paying off a resonable amount of loans should be doable for you once you get out, but your parents may have other ideas about what is a good amount to borrow. Most people can get enough student loans to finance an in-state school - talk to your guidance counselor or just google the info. One rule-of-thumb is not to borrow more than your anticipated starting salary - so if you graduate with the 6-year program that would be about 100K. To hedge your bets (and reduce overall interest costs) I would try to borrow less during the first few years to see how well you take to college.

Your scores (based upon my review of this thread, and published info see [Rutgers | Rutgers Admissions](http://admissions.rutgers.edu/academics/admissionsprofile.aspx)) you are probably in the “maybe” category, based upon what your upcoming competition will be. Rutgers Admissions seems to be more of a data-driven (grades, scores) based upon your first three years of high school, and what you are taking for your 4th. So, you probably want to take the SAT again, and,

Just go to a bookstore and browse through the various SAT prep books and see the one you like the best, which means you will be liable to study it more. Personally, I don’t think there is that much difference in a “book” prep method in the end (not that I would recommend paying for a course).

Just apply as early as possible, which may give you a leg up against later, better scoring applicants. Rutgers allows people to apply to up to three of their schools on one app, and I would assume some qualified people check off the pharmacy program even if they are not really interested in going.

-Visit Rutgers if you have not yet already - some people may be put off attending based upon the “bus tour” of the sprawling campuses.

Good luck - maybe, as I am a

–Parent of probable early applicant (neither of us sees the value in obsessing)

Is an SAT score of 2170 enough to get into Rutgers pharm? (690CR and 720math)

Turns out I’m about 15/about 270…

Mostly cause my med term class gave me low marks and other ppl have the luxury of easy A’s in their band classes and such…

Does this set me back that much…? If I do a little better my first marking period of Senior Year make a difference? Will Rutgers see it?

And yeah I suppose all I can do now is just work on my SAT I’.s

Does visiting the college matter? I don’t care how it looks… I’d live in a dump if I got a good education. BUT, if the admissions people see that I visited and am interested I would definitely do it I guess.

If I apply as soon as I can, when can I expect to hear the decision? It says December 2010 is the last month to apply about around February 2011 is the decision date… But if I apply earlier than December can I also find out earlier?

Thanks

Anyone wanna tell me what they think my chances of getting in are?

First of all, I would be out of state.
I also changed schools (and states) between soph. and junior year so the weighted GPA and school rankings aren’t really reliable, also the school system is drastically different, but I dunno whether or not that weighs in the decision.

GPA is 3.65 unweighted
SAT: 2000 (600 CR, 800 Math, 600 Writing)
SAT II: Math II 760, Chemistry 780, US history 650
ACT: 31 (Reading 32, math 32, science 33, english 25) w/ essay
AP’s: Chemistry 4, US History 3, Calc. AB 5

I have a lot of EC’s… but the ones with leadership positions are Chess Club (president) and Robotics Club (vice president). I’m also a member of American Mensa and am in Varsity Cross Country (senior year).

Senior year classes are Honors + AP Bio, Civics. and Econ, AP Gov, AP Physics C (mechanical and electrical), British Literature, Wind Ensemble (bari. sax.)

Jyxl41:

I would say visiting does matter, especially if you want your parents to see value in you going to a school you seem to like, and funding you as such. You should also visit a few other schools for comparison, i.e. Delaware (smaller, traditional surroundings) and Binghamton (one campus, newer) and even an urban campus (try Temple). You don’t want to find out that you can’t stand living in a “dump” only after you are there. There are Saturday Pharmacy-specific sessions and even a Wednesday session that also does the bus tour. Check out the website.

Rutgers will not consider Senior year grades as far as I have heard. They do consider your courses and do weight honors courses.

And yeah, if you apply earlier, you will hear earlier. I would call/ask admissions for specifics beyond the website.

I am applying straight from high school. I saw a few people talking about an interview. Is that just for transfer students or is there also an interview for people applying from high school? I didn’t see anything about an interview on their site.

Hi. I’m from Illinois and looking to apply to Rutgers Pharmacy 0+6.

I actually just spent the last hour reading this thread because I’m really interested in Rutgers only because I won’t have to reapply to pharmacy school after 2 years.

I’ve seen a couple people ask about out-of-state people but I didn’t really see a solid answer. For those of you who are/were in the program, how many people did you know from out of state? I don’t need an exact percentage but I’m just curious about how many there were. Does being out of state lower my chances?

(33 ACT / 3.88 (unweighted) / 4.21 (weighted) / 4 Honors & 5 AP / Blue Ribbon High School)

This is a little off-topic, but I’m also interested in Rutgers if they offer a business school (pretty sure they do of some sort).

Not only that, but how is it compared to the Pharmacy school? Is it harder or easier or what (to get in)?

And they offer some sort of technology also? Because for me it’s either Pharmacy or being something in the line of computers (I like math. Science too). One may question the business school aspect but it’s recommended to have an MBA, and if I ever get “bored” of computers or whatnot, it’s always great to have nowadays.

Any info is greatly appreciated. If my questions could be directed to another thread on the Rutgers Forum, link me if you want. Mainly interested in knowing if it’s more challenging or not.

Thanks!

I don’t know if perhaps RU Pharmacy offers interviews to people who are borderline, but in general, they don’t interview HS students. You just have to pass an interview to transition into the professional years, but I’ve never heard of anyone failing to pass that, so don’t worry about it.

There are a quite a number of out of state and international students in my class, but I don’t know any exact statistics. I wouldn’t worry about being an OOS applicant.

RU Business isn’t top-tier, but it isn’t bad either…there’s actually a PharmD/MBA program that just got established, so you can consider applying for that in the future (you need to get into RU Pharmacy first though)

I haven’t been on CC for the longest time. But since I don’t want to outline bio…

In response to the out-of-state questions, I’m currently a pp1 and I know many people who are out-of-state and in the pharmacy program. I remember them telling us during orientation that there are some international students in Pharm as well. I can say that most people are from NJ but Rutgers Pharm has a lot of kids out of state. That being said, the chances of an out of state student, I believe is pretty much similar to those of a NJ student (based on some of my friends who are out-of-state).

I suggest you try and apply. It never hurts to try! I never thought I would be going to Rutgers Pharmacy until I got in.
By the way, I applied mid-October and got in the day before Thanksgiving. My friend applied early September and ended up waitlisted in January.

If an applicant’s grades and stats are better, does he/she hear from Rutgers pharmacy sooner? Or is it just random?
