I’ve been accepted as a transfer anthropology major into ucla. My goal is to eventually become an archaeologist and am extremely interested in this field. I’m 25 and when thinking of my future have recently become concerned with my major decision. I am truly excited and interested in archaeology and in a perfect world would love to start a career as an archaeologist. All the research and advice that I’ve looked into has told me with an archaeology major I have a future of hardship and uncertainty. I’ve been dating my girlfriend for 5 years and I intend on marrying her in the next two years and starting a family. She is amazing and is ok with me traveling for my job for months at a time but I can’t help but think I should change my major. I honestly never thought I would think to change my major, and even talked down on people who were excepted into elite programs and switched, but recently I’ve been hypocritically looking at my options. I’m not proud of asking this question but seriously looking at my options, and wanting to realistically provide for my future family. The only other major I have contemplated is geology. I know I would love it and I’m quite confident I would excel as a geologist. My question is whether or not it is possible to switch. Ucla is my dream school and has been my whole life. Unfortunately I’ve been influenced to look at archaeology as a career the same way a professional musician, artist, or skateboarder would. Am I crazy to have so much doubt? All I want is provide for a family and live comfortably. I do love archaeology, but I do think I will fall in love with geology. Can I switch? Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

If you are asking whether it is a good idea to switch to geolgy for job purposes, yes, itis a major with better job possibilities than either antropology or archaeology. Now, the question of whether it is possible for you to change to geology at UCLA, well, you need to speak to the university about that. It is likely that you can but you might have to take some more basic courses if you did not take them at your previous university. This might lengthen your studies somewhat.
