Anthropology UCB vs UCSD vs UCLA

I have been doing a lot of research on the Anthropology programs at these 3 schools. I am going to go to one of these.

Berkeley has a very impressive faculty and for sure is on the cutting edge of the field, but the program and classes offered just don't look as good as UCSD's anthro program. I am also TAP certified at UCLA, and their program doesn't look as good as UCSD's, but it still looks better than Berkeley's.

Anyone Anthro majors doing the same research? Anyone that already transferred still post here and can tell me about the programs at any school?

I am actually leaning more towards UCSD and saving money for Grad School, but it is going to be so hard to turn down the acceptance to Berkeley if I get in. To me, the program at UCSD looks superior, but I also feel I would be making a mistake by not taking the Berkeley or UCLA offers.

HALP!

I’ve heard UCSB has a great Anthro program. Of course grad school will matter most.

berkeleyorbust - why don’t you just hold off on this thread UNTIL YOU GET ACCEPTED?!? Who knows, all your problems might be solved if you just get rejected from la/berk :)

Aside from the above, have you looked up the actual course offerings per quarter/semester at each school?
A department’s catalog of classes might be “interesting”, but it may not matter if they don’t offer all those classes on a yearly basis. You may find that the most interesting classes are only offered once every 2-4 years.

Yeah I actually have been looking at the schedules over the past year. Some classes are only offered in the Spring or Fall or every other year.

I am just doing the due diligence and investigating the programs so I can be more prepared. It just is starting to look like UCSD might be the better fit for me, because I am already networking for archaeology very well in SD. I was just surprised to see that UCSD’s program looked that much more attractive to me than Berkeley’s/UCLA.

This is just one of the many places I am going for feedback and words of experience. All the research I am doing will help me make the decision better in April/May. I need to plan ahead because to move is a big deal. I am a 30 year old student living on my own, and my entire family is on the East Coast, and I have a really good job here. So to leave for UCB/UCLA will have to REALLY be worth it for me.

I am also a TAP certified Honor Student with a 3.8 and a ****-ton of ECs and Honors, so I should have no problem getting into all 3 Anthro programs, seeing as they are not that impacted anyhow.

Thanx for the feedback guys.

I think that if you are undecided because it IS UCLA and BERKELEY, you shouldn’t be. I feel that what bugs you is not going to the ‘brand’ name school, get me?
If UCSD HAS what it takes to make YOU as an anthro major more successful, then go for it. Remember, it is also an honor being admitted, and not going. Not many people can say that :P
