Any advice for a sophomore?

Hello!

I’m currently a sophomore attending a pretty challenging high school, it’s ranked in the top 100, or was, last year. UC Davis is my school of preference because I’m aspiring to become a veterinarian.

Because of all the pressure coming from school, I’m starting to already get worried about getting into a good college (for me, UC Davis)!

Currently my GPA (unweighted) is a 3.737 =[, but I’m counting on getting a 4.0 this semester, so hopefully it will raise itself up.

My weighted GPA is 4.337, and my junior year I’m planning on taking quite a few APs.

Freshman year my GPA was very similar to the one I have now.

Freshman classes: English 1 H, World History H, Biology H, French 1, Geometry, and Soccer

Sophomore Classes: Japanese 1, English 2 H, French 2, Algebra 2, Chemistry H, and Environmental Science AP

Since I’m only a sophomore, I haven’t taken the SAT or anything yet, but would anyone be kind enough to give me any advice on how to better my future application to Davis?

You’re definitely on the right track for Davis. It’s still hard to tell because you’re a sophomore - a lot of my friends’ GPAs dropped coming out of junior year. Keep that GPA up where it is and get familiar with the SAT this summer (you’ll want to shoot for around 2100).

It might help to clock in some volunteer hours or even do some ECs that supplement your passion for the veterinary field.

By the way, your UC GPA includes grades from sophomore and junior year only, so just keep it up and you’ll be fine.

Thank you so much for your reply!

And I’m pretty sure that I’ll be taking a SAT class this summer or in the beginning of junior year to help me prepare for it

As of now, I don’t really have volunteer hours, but I am participating in this environmental service for our city, which should give me a good number of hours come the time I apply to Davis.

I also am in a peer chemistry tutoring thing at our school, and from that I have somewhere around 20 hours, but I’m hoping to get much more (:

What classes (APS) would you recommend to take that would look good on an application to Davis, or any other school for that matter?

Thanks!

Haha as for classes, if you’re doing anything medical related, I think AP Bio, AP Chem and AP Calc definitely helps with your application’s demonstration of course rigor. Other than being relevant to your major, the AP sciences classes help prepare you for the shock of first year science courses.

If you’re set on Davis, this would be a good basic guideline to go by. [University of California - a-g Guide](http://www.ucop.edu/a-gGuide/ag/welcome.html)

Anyway, if you have any other questions just let me know.

Volunteering at a wildlife center, vet’s office, local dog shelter are a few examples of vet related ECs
Are you 16 yet? Do you drive?
Research is also good

Hmmm, okay!

I’m just a little anxious with taking bio ap, it’s KILLER at my school, and chem ap is pretty challenging too, I’ve heard

Do you think it would greatly hurt my chances if I didn’t take bio or chem?

Thanks again for helping! =)

I’m planning on volunteering at a shelter, and there’s a local vet’s office, but I’m not exactly sure on how to approach them to ask about volunteering :/…

I’m not 16 yet (I’m on the younger side out of most of the 10th graders)

Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it!

My advice is to not take too many AP’s unless you want to be miserable. Remember, UC’s only weight up to 8 semesters of your coursework (except for UCB and UCLA). Also, freshman year doesn’t count in your gpa.

Don’t take both bio and chem. Choose one or the other.

If you end up as a general bio major, you’ll still need chem courses, which are VERY rigorous. I’d recommend taking both bio and chem - both classes were invaluable to my friends that are biochem/bio general/bioeng majors in terms of adjusting to the science courses in college. Bs in an AP class are also worth more than As in regular classes.

I don’t see the problem with taking both bio and chem. They’re both very interesting and will prepare you for college style science. I have taken classes science classes at my local college and they are helpful in terms of better understanding background information. Also, it looks good on your application and the extra points. Colleges will see you challenged yourself.

I personally love science so my judgment may be a little bias ^^. Either way, if you like science go for it.

thanks so much for all the replies!!

the AP bio class at my school is VERY rigorous, probably one of the hardest classes in the entire school, and i do well in chemistry, but i don’t feel passionately for the subject at ALL

this is what i’m planning on taking junior year, but do you guys think it will hurt my chances by not doing bio or chem?

English 3 H (block)
AP US hist (block)
French 3 H
Precalc (regular, sadly i’m horrible at math)
AP Psychology
Marine Bio H
I’m also planning on doing Academic Decathlon which counts as an elective and is flexible with my soccer schedule
