Any advice?

Hi ya'll. I'm new to CC, but I've heard that this is a really fantastic community in terms of college help (duh). I was wondering if ya'll could chance me? William and Mary is my first choice, so I'd really love to get some feedback to see if I'm on the right track...

EC's:
100+ Volunteer hours (by the end of this semester)
Honor Roll/Principals List, 9, 10
National Novel Writing Month winner, 1 year (dunno if this counts...you're a winner if you write the set number of words in the month)
Member of 2 honor societies or academic clubs (Science National Honor Society and Beta Club)
Will be a member of 3 honor societies by 11th (that's when induction starts)

I know that I need to beef up my EC's, in addition to doing better on the SAT and improving my class rank. I really love writing, science, and art, so I'd really like to show WM that. Any suggestions as to good writing or science programs?

And finally....thanks for taking the time to read all this, if you have. And also, sorry it's really long and all over the place! :)

What scale is that 1590 on?

Out of a 2400, I believe

1590 out of 2400? Are you sure? That doesn’t mesh with the rest of your profile at all… you have a respectable rank (though outside of the top 10%) and a number of AP classes… I know W&M has a holistic approach, but a 1590 out of 2400 is like 1060 out of 1600, which is very very very very low for W&M. The rest of your profile seems competitive.

The list of courses you have taken/plan to take is incredibly rigorous which is a great start. Guessing your grades are As and Bs by your rank. We encourage students to really focus on junior and senior course work and try to demonstrate an upward grade trend as your course work gets harder.

The middle 50% of our out-of-state students score between a 1380-1430 (Critical Reading and Math). Because we take your best standardized testing outcome, we recommend that any student try an exam at least twice or try each exam once so re-taking the SAT or trying the ACT (or both) can’t hurt you and could help you.

We would also encourage you to pursue some additional extracurricular activities. As it stands, your extracurricular activities are a tad light compared to many applicants. We certainly respect service hours and admission to honor societies but like to see students making contributions to their school beyond admission to honor societies.

As for your ability to demonstrate your artistic or writing abilities, you can certainly make a fine art submission in dance, visual art, music or theatre as part of your application. The submission is reviewed by W&M faculty and that review is put into your application for review. For writing, take advantage of the essay and optional submission to show us that talent.

For more on any applicant’s chances, check out our Admit It! Blog ([W&M Blogs Chance Me](http://blogs.wm.edu/2010/12/14/chance-me/))

Wow, thanks! Yes, my SAT score is out of a 2400. I know that my scores are low compared to where I’m at in school, but I like to think that my SAT can be improved by studying next time and focusing my attention on where I didn’t do well.

@W&M Admissions–

Thank you so much for replying! I really do plan on pursuing EC’s as the summer starts, especially since I’ll have more free time.

By the way, one of the things that I really love about WM is that they DO take an interest in students outside of the essays, applications, etc. Thanks for being so awesome!

Thanks for the compliment steelydana. Awesome works for us!
