any alternative to co-signing

Are there any loans that students can give without having a parent co-sign? Is there a way for a student to establish some kind of credit history through credit card use and part-time and summer jobs and get a loan on their own?

I am guessing the answer is no, but I want to see if there is anything I don't know about.

There are Stafford loans. A freshman student is eligible for $5500 in Stafford even of there is no financial need. No cosigner required.
