Errm,so? Since when is age the most important factor?

lol, okay okay,
tell me which schools do u think are better than Harvard and Why ??

I'm not talking about better and best here. You said Harvard could not be compared. I say it can be. Take Princeton or Yale, for example. How about MIT? Stanford? Aren't they "comparable"?

Harvard and Yale have been the most popular US schools for ages but a few years ago Yale would only admit a small number of intels with limited finaid packages, so the smartest Bulgarians would apply to the other famous university - Harvard. Now some of the Bulgarians know that MIT and Yale are even more selective and in many aspects better but Harvard will remain the only US school everybody in Bulgaria has heard about. And in 4-5-6 years when you graduate and come back in Bulgaria (I assume you will) to look for a job, saying "I graduated from Harvard" will differ from "I graduated from Princeton", though they share #1 on USNWR. Yeah, I know, it's not fair but it's true.

BTW, if samuck just wanted to emphasize how brilliant BG students are, it wouldn't have been useful to give Yale as an example since there are 7 Bulgarians at Yale overall and the number of Bulgarian intels at Harvard is smaller than the number of Canadians only (at least it was so a few years ago).

samuck, are you Bulgarian? I haven't seen you on CC before.

The oldest university in Europe is in Bologna, Italy and was founded in the XI century. The oldest one in the world was founded BC in Egypt I think. None of them is comparable to any of the world's best universities.

First of all, who said I'll be coming back to Bulgaria?
Second of all, Yale is now need-blind for internationals.
Third of all, there are more than 7 Bulgarians at Yale. Check their site if you don't believe me.

If you're not coming back to Bulgaria, why do you care what Bulgarians think about Harvard and US colleges in general?

Yale is NOW need-blind for internationals but about 10-15 years ago when Bulgarian students faced the opportunity to study abroad and had to choose between the most popular US colleges it wasn't need-blind and accepted very few intels.

Bulgarians at Yale might be more than 7 but they're still much fewer than Bulgarians at Harvard.

Actually it's a good question. Maybe I shouldn't care. As much as I'd like to, I can't enlighten the nation, can I?
Still, I was kind of hoping Bulgarians could at least try to open their eyes a lil...

Yes, Yale is NOW need-blind. But that's what we are talking about, aren't we? NOW. What does it matter where Bulgarians went 15 years ago? That's in the past. Times change. Apparently some misconceptions remain the same, though.

Yes, Bulgarians at Harvard are more. They'll most likely continue being more. Why? Simply because they'll keep applying MAINLY there. Which goes back to the stereotypes I was originally discussing. It's Harvard or nothing. How said is that?

Anyway. Time to go now. Ttyl people.

Hey guys :)

First of all, good luck with your tests and applications.
Second, I'm a freshman at Amherst, so if you have any questions you can contact me at "emotem [at] abv [dot] bg"

i live in plovdiv and will be going back for this Christmas break. I will probably bring some brochures, viewbooks and stuff, and maybe do a presentation on Amherst. So if you're interested drop me a line ;)

jhudora, I think you care about what not only Bulgarians but everybody thinks. Maybe you want to be able to say "I study at Yale" and see people's eyes fly out of their orbits with respect. And there's nothing wrong with that. But... enlighten the nation? The nation doesn't need enlightening about American universities! We're in Bulgaria! Of course, it would be better if Bulgarians knew that Harvard is not the best school in the USA and that there's no best university (actually there is but it's different for everyone) but if everyone here knew much about those schools, it would be a problem. It would be a problem if every second student was applying to US colleges. It is a problem that one of my intended majors is psychology but I have no idea what exams I have to sit if I want to study it in Bulgaria, while I'm an expert on American colleges. We're open enough to have 3000-4000 students in the USA and many (I don't know exactly how many) in Germany and other countries. Or maybe our higher education system is vicious enough to not keep them here? We need to open our eyes for so many things that are more important thatn the rankings of some distant colleges at the other side of the ball. What I'm trying to say (sorry for using so many words) is that it's not fair but it probably should be so. We don't need to know what happens every year with the US colleges admissions.

15 years ago Bulgarians had a reason to choose Harvard to Yale and thus Harvard became more popular in Bulgaria. And NOW that they both give good finaid packages to internationals students prefer the more popular one which became popular not now but in the PAST. But I've always been an optimist and I think that students like you and mariela will change the history in a few years. :)

Actually Harvard is the only place I have stats for and the night before I read this discussion I'd been at an interviewers' training workshop in which the Harvard admissions officer had emphasized the very high powered applicant pool in Bulgaria. Didn't mean to start anything by posting the Harvard numbers - sorry.

You have nothing to be sorry about - you didn't start anything :) We all know those numbers.

We haven't posted here for so long! Hi to Aberine:)

Thanks : ))) ! that was SWEET :)

hey guys, pozdravi ot angliiskata v sf;)

You're in Florida? Sounds great:) Welcome to the Bulgarian thread:)

10x:) It's always great to see some Bulgarians around, even when they are pointlessly bashing eachother:P
nah, I'm actually in sofia right now, finishing my senior year at FELS. My parents live in FL, and I also live there technically... but my heart, body and soul are here:)

But your parents are Bulgarian, right?

Well... um... I was just expressing my opinion... I didn't mean it to sound harsh or something.

yeah.
oh, it was no surprise to see Bulgarians fighting over something:) though you're right, it was a very mild argument.

SAT_hater, which schools are u applying to ?
