Any Chance at Ivy League?

Thanks Atropates for your advice! this is my first year in debate and I am new at a school (first year ever doing debate). I have no state awards yet because my first state tourney is next week, but I have a State Science Olympiad Competition same weekend on opposite sides of my state (so disappointing :frowning: ). I have the best starting record, and I am the new (not to brag), next big-time L-D debator at my school. Hope this helps!
(LOL at your student congress comment…we make fun of those people at my school! hahah!!! ).

Which state are you in? I know that NY has beastly debate kids, Bronx Sci took both the Harvard awards this year i believe. And in my district, 11 people showed up for CFL national elims for 5 qualifications xD

New York does have wonderful debate programs! I live in North Carolina, and our debate programs are not as good as the ones up north… but you guys beast in like everything!

I am choosing to do Science Olympiad over Debate this year (hard decision), as I cannot drive to both sides of NC and return to my city to take an AP exam the next day! I wish the scheduling was better!

I placed 2nd in my first tournament, 11th in my second (largest tournament in NC), and I continue to hone my skills. I did have a bad tourney this year, but I technically should have placed in final round of a national tourney at Duke University (should have won by forfeit, opponet showed up 45 minutes late; was completely hosed in another round-opponet did terrible job- judge did worse; and had a 50/50 round where it was almost too close to call). My debate teacher has been stunned by my early success (took teammates several tournaments to actually do well).

I have a knack for arguing, as I have won top spots to participate in mock debates as well (want to go to law school).

Nice. Myers Park is AMAZING (I believe they are in NC). A lot of kids did really well in my Harvard room for Stuco (Though i didn’t do that bad either ^_~). I know one girl from Myers Park finaled (I believe she took top 5?) at Harvard…, so NC is not that far behind. Florida has really good schools also…Anyways, don’t worry about duke, we all get those types of judges, i once got a 1 1 1 in a national qualifier and a 7 from the fourth judge which gave me first alternate (Like anyone would drop out haha)

I think you made a good decision, as states is usually a much higher level of competition.

Thanks Atropates, you have been a great help! Myers park does beast in our state, and I learned by watching THEIR instructional videos LOL! Sorry, I guess that I am a bit bitter about Duke still-but I am a Wake/UNC fan (explains it perfectly). I feel bad about your bad experience witha judge. :frowning: The only reason I chose to go to Science Olympiad is that I feel that I have a really good shot in this competition. I’m doing trajectory, remote sensing, and cell biology next weekend, so I hope that I do well. Anyway, I appreciate your comments Atropates!

No Problem, and that judge story was probably my second worst, the worst is when a Harvard judge said i should buy a tie on the comments sheet and nothing else xD. Also, it seems its a very small world if you know Myers Park. I would suggest making friends with some of their kids, as they usually come back to judge mwahaha.

Excellent strategy, Atropates, when it comes to Myers Park…you’re an evil mastermind! LOL! Man, that Harvard judge seems to hate kids or has issues. Thanks for all of your help!

I believe most applying to ivy league schools take calculus by junior year, if not sooner. Can you accelerate during the summer?

This is a problem because my school does not like me doing this, but I guess than I can beg? My school does not like for me to take advanced classes (were impatient that I took Physics as a sophomore) that kids don’t normally take. Alas, I will try to brave through it (my job and volunteer work will get in way of trying to learn math over the summer). BTW, I go to a rigourous private school, so it’s not like I am slacking off. Thanks!

bump…bump…bump…can somebody explain why I need calculus before/ by junior year?

bump…is it important to take calculus by junior year?

bump…
