Any Chance at ME with this MCA?

Now that we know there is no chance for our S to change his application, I’m wondering if he has a shot at all at his preferred major, Mechanical Engineering.

His MCA SHOULD be a 4969 but he messed up the math reporting and only has a 4719. We are out of state. Does he have any chance of being admitted to ME with a 4719?

For an OOS candidate, I’d question 4969 being accurate. Most of the important adders aren’t available to OOS candidates (Partner School, Service Area, Faculty/Staff, CA Vet, etc.). It is certainly possible, but it would require an unweighted 4.0, near perfect or perfect SATs, full rigor doing ECs with leadership more than 20 hours a week AND working a job more than 20 hours a week in a major related field. Are you certain your math is right?

As for 4719, my guess is it’ll put him on the bubble, meaning it cold go either way. If he’s ABSOLUTELY certain Cal Poly is the one, he could increase his odds by choosing General and switching to ME.

Wish him luck.

Thanks, @eyemgh !

These are his “stats”:

His reconfigured GPA went over 4.2, so he maxed that out.

ACT: 36 E, 36R, 35M
SAT: 1550 (780 M, 770 R)
He is in an IB diploma program so definitely full rigor. He has straight As in all classes.

In terms of courses taken, he has four years of math (should be five, but that’s why we’re in this mess)
Seven years of science (he doubled up on science 10-12th grades)
Four years of language arts (two years honors, two years IB)
Four years of social studies (two years honors, two years IB)
One year of performing arts
Three years of Spanish (should also be four due to middle school)
One year of extra college prep elective

His school only has six class periods per day so this is all he could fit in his schedule. They also only offer four honors courses: freshman and sophomore LA and SS, all of which he took.

Captain of XC team (15 hours/week in summer, 21+ in fall, 5/week in winter, then back to 21+ in spring with the spring season)
Founding member and now president of school club (3 hours/week during school year)
Eagle Scout and holds leadership position in troop (averages 3 hours/week year round with one week in summer that is full time as they do a 50+ mile backpacking trip each year)
Volunteer summer camp counselor at residential camp (full time all week for three weeks)
Various volunteering projects throughout year with Scouts (food bank, rebuilding trails, etc)
This summer he had a job all summer in a major-related field and worked on average 50+ hours per week

I might be forgetting something, but this should get him a fairly high MCA.

I could be wrong, but work hours, I believe, aren’t summer hours, but school year hours. I’m not certain though. Hence you could see why it’s hard to amass close to 5000, if that’s indeed the case.

Gotcha. So does he then have no chance?

If so, it is disheartening that a kid with these scores, GPA, extracurriculars, leadership, etc would not have a chance at all because the system is automated. I feel like he would have an excellent chance if a human reviewed his app. :slightly_frowning_face:

First, I’m not certain summer hours don’t count. Second, I don’t think they verify and you can’t change it anyway. Maybe they’ll offset.

LOL! Maybe a mistake in his favor that time! Good point!

@eyemgh I know you’ve probably posted this before, but is there a breakdown by college and/or major in terms of GPA and SAT or is the admitted profile from the CP SLO website the only available data that I can see?

https://admissions.calpoly.edu/prospective/profile.html

The problem with that information is that it’s the mean for the whole college. Applicants compete by major. The average paints a falsely rosy picture for some and a falsely dire pictures for others.
