Ive been reading all the other "chance me" posts and everybody else has wicked good stats, and now im second guessing that i'll get in....

any thoughts?

Having taken calculus, I'm surprised you didn't do the Math2 subject test - my son actually got a better score on it than level 1. (Only 10 points but still...) I think you've got a decent chance. Your statistics put you on the low end of the middle 50% of the accepted class.Admission Statistics I don't know how much of a bump being an URM and female will give you, but a fair amount I'd guess. That said, CMU is a reach for nearly everyone - even when your stats make you a match.

Your math1 score of 730 is actually quite good I think. It is at a higher percentile than a 730 on math2. It is more impressive to score high on math1 than math 2 i think.

It covers easier math, why would it be more impressive. The students who take Math2 are generally the strongest math students - so of course a sizable percentage score 800s, but why not take a test that proves you've mastered trig? Percentiles have to be put in perspective.

well I guess I thought she had already taken AP Calc, which would show that she has taken difficult enough math, but now that i look there is no score. would you agree that if she had taken ap calc already and had a score for that, then it would not matter as much which math she took?

I'm not an admissions officer, but logically you'd think a score of a 4 or 5 in AP Calc BC or 5 in AP would be very helpful. (Those are the scores for which you can get credit at SCS and I assume CIT is similar.) However, AP scores are generally only self reported so it's hard to know just what sort of weight they are given. I've heard (but not from any reliable source) that it's more important to show that you took the hardest available courses than how well you actually did on the exams.

At anyrate my point was only that schools and teachers ought to tell their students to take the Math2 exam at the end of precalc. Most of them will do very well. At least one school (Harvey Mudd) want to see the Math2 exam.

Well I was hoping you would validate me there because I took AP Calc AB as a sophomore, then there was no math class for me as a junior, but then I took the Math1 at the end of my junior year because I wasn't aware that the math1 was frowned upon. Oh well.

i took the math lvl 1 before i took calc, and i also took it because i had heard that they were basically the same difficulty, just different topics, but ive still regretted not taking the lvl 2...
