I am a 22 year old looking for some post-secondary education advice. Being that I have been out of school for 5 years, I really don't have many resources available to me. More than anything, I would like some advise on what colleges I should consider. More importantly, what colleges will consider me. I would like to be chanced in particular for Pace University in NY and ASU.

My stats are:

GPA - 2.5 Academic GPA/ 2.25 Total GPA
I have no idea what my class rank is (I am sure it is bad)
First generation college/URM
SAT 2280
MAT 760 CR 760 Writing 760

I think you have an excellent chance at getting into Pace. Although your GPA is low your SAT scores are great!!! Since you graduated high school 5 years ago I feel like they may value your GPA less than they would for other candidates. Your SAT scores show that you obviously are intelligent and maybe you were just not working at your full potential in hs. Are you looking for schools in NY in particular?

ichabod94, thank you for your response! Yes, I am specifically looking for schools in NY (NY,NY to be more specific). As much as I would love to attend NYU, I doubt I have a shot there. Is there any other NY colleges that you might recommend? Again, thanks for your response.

No problem! I wouldn’t count NYU out. If you can provide a valid reason that your GPA was low you may increase your chances of acceptance. You may want to apply to Gallatin as I have heard that their acceptance rates tend to be higher than other schools at NYU. Are you only interested in private schools? You might want to look at the New School and Marymount Manhattan. If you are interested in Public schools you might consider applying to Hunter or City College which are much more affordable (you would have a good chance of admittance to both, in my opinion). Overall, I would advise you to apply to a variety of places and definitely don’t be afraid to aim too high because there are not very many people with your range of SAT scores! BTW, are those scores recent, or taken in high school? Because that could also factor into their admissions decision.

ichabod94, again thanks for your input/advice. The SAT scores are recent (last year). Would taking the subject test, most likely math l, math ll, and chem, be beneficial? At least assuming that I fared well (+700-750). Would this increase my chances at NYU?

I would think so. Any excellent test scores that you can show them will help you. The more ways that you can show you have the potential to succeed academically, the better. I would take 3 subject tests and see how you do. After all, I believe NYU has score choice so you won’t be forced to send any scores that aren’t top notch. Also, I think it is a good thing these scores are recent because it shows that you still have academic potential. If your SAT’s were mediocre I don’t think you would have a very good chance of acceptance, but with your SAT’s I think you stand an excellent chance at NYU. Also elaborate on what you have been doing for the past 5 years since HS and how that makes you diverse and how that will help you succeed in college.
