I'm from Russia, currently studying in an english-speaking college in Moscow. I'm trying to transfer as a junior to the UChicago. BUT I really messed up my sat (M720, V550, W630, essay 9) and toefl (263, essay 5.0) :(

I have excellent high school record, at least it is considered so in my country. I got gold medal for the academic excellence (national top 0.3) and have gpa 5.0 out of 5.0, winner of numerous contests in math, english, science... My college gpa is 3.79 (2 years), this semester is straight 4.0 (out of 4.0) so far. I also took UChicago summer session courses (got A, A, B there).

I also wrote some really really good essays, which I hope to be competitive even with native-speakers...

But my sat and toefl scores destroy everything!!! Do you think I still have any chances to get in??

I think you do. If you can maybe raise your verbal and writing scores since the average for verbal is 680-770 and for writing is 670-740. Other than that, you're record so far is very strong, I think the only thing from keeping you in is those SAT scores. good luck.

ohhh, that's the thing! i already sent in....
i took the test 2 times but since my decision to trasfer was kind of rush, i didnt have much time to prepare.. loser.. :(

UChicago is one of the most competitive schools in the states, although some students there are harvard/stanford/pton rejects, they are all extremely bright, talented and hardworking i would say. and it's a liberal arts school right? so you'll have to take humanities and other courses etc.

with a 550V and 630W, it doesn't really show that your english abilities will be enough to carry you through their tough curriculum. But i know the admissions there care a lot about Essays, so if your transfer essay was well prepared, then you might stand a chance.
Best of LUCK :D

i took some courses from uchicago and also am a sudent of an english-speaking school... hope this might convice them that i am able to keep up with their academics... i'm soooo nervous. thanks for your comments anyway. i should set myself more pessimistic..
