The only information I see about Hofstra Honors College is a bit dated. Does any current honor students or parents care to share thei experience? Are you happy with your decision? Is it academically challenging? What advantage do you have over regular Hofstra students? My D is also looking at Adelphi honors college and would love to have a point of reference to compare those two programs.
Thanks in advance
Hofstra honors college students take a first-year class (something about culture…dont really remember now) and take classes with an honors option. Honors option is simply extra work (more hw, assignments, lab work, etc) on top of a regular class. Honors students also get better housing and couple of other small benefits not really worth mentioning, and get a honors designation on their diploma.
Thanks. So basically there is no separate administration team working with the honors college students, like advisors, deans, ets? Do honors kids have a strong close knit community if they are not living on campus? Those are the big perks that we are looking for.
There is a separate “administration team”, but its probably not like what you’re imagining. E.g I am a biology major, so I have my biology advisor and dean, but I also have a “honors college advisor”, who’s not very helpful tbh. Honors kids dormed together as freshmen but commuters didn’t really have a close knit community. So the honors college is pretty much this: do extra work, take few extra classes, and graduate with honors distinction. There’s nothing too fancy about it
Got it, thanks!
Honors college advisers are helpful for a lot of things! A lot of the time you would want to go to your major adviser for information, but honors college advisers help with scheduling classes and if you don’t know where to go for something, honors college is a great place to start. They do free trips into the city for honors college students all the time, and special events for just honors college kids. If you embrace the community, it is an incredible experience. I have loved being a part of the honors college and definitely recommend it to anyone who’s invited.
Thanks so much for your input hofcat, glad to hear it’s been a positive experience for you. Are you a commuter or do you live on campus?
Honors college is a great opportunity. The community truly is great and really creates an amazing environment to grow in. I would say that it is worth it.
So I’m currently looking at Hofstra to double major (I’ve been told this is an option if you’re coming in with close to 30 credits) and be a part of the accelerated law program. Would the honors college be conducive to that? From what I read, the classes are made harder? I’m not scared of hard work and I’m certain I’d love the community, I just wanted an opinion on how much extra work it adds in.
