Any English majors with Linguistics/English Language area of concentration ..?

What are some good Linguistics classes to take which do not require prerequisites? And, how strict are they abou prereqs? Will telebears block me if I have not taken the prerequisites? How hard are Linguistics classes in general, say, if you have not taken the prerequisites? Thanks.

Linguistics is harder than most people think, but still, it's not painfully difficult. You'd be best starting with some lower-division classes, such as Ling 5 (Intro to Language and Linguistics) or Ling 55AC (The American Languages) to get a feel for it. As far as upper division classes go, most will have a prerequisite of Ling 100 (the upper-division intro), which, I would say, is necessary. Almost all upper-division classes build on a topic introduced in Ling 100.

I've heard (and was considering) jumping straight into 100 without taking 5. From what I can tell, 100 is a far more advanced and in-depth version of 5, and many students seem to think that their taking 5 was helpful, but I think it isn't necessary . . . it just makes your life a lot less difficult.

You don't need 5 to do well in 100, by any means.
