Linguistics prerequisites

I'm transferring in the fall and I'm interested in taking some linguistics courses over the next two years. My schedule is already going to be fairly tight as I have to take 3 lower division classes in order to satisfy major requirements (I'm a philosophy major). I'm looking for a way to take the classes I'm interested in, but would like to potentially avoid some of the prerequisites in order to save time. When I was doing CalSo, I heard that prerequisites are often not adhered to when registering (at least for some departments, anyway).

I'm very much interested in taking Introduction to Syntax and Semantics (Linguistics 120) and Logical Semantics (Linguistics 121) as well as some others if I have time. For anybody that may have taken these courses or would have any advice, how important is Linguistics 100 (Introduction to Linguistics Science) as a prerequisite for these courses? If I were able to register for 120 or 121 without having taken it, would I be completely lost? I have very limited prior experience with the subjects, though I do read a bit in the way of philosophy of language.

Thank you!

I don’t know how important it is (I’ve taken Linguis 100 but have yet to take 120). One thing you can do is just crash the Linguis 100 lectures. If you have a friend taking it, even better; ask him or her when the prof is covering syntax/semantics.

Yeah, if it seems like I won’t be able to find out beforehand how important it is to take Linguistics 100, I’ll either take it or crash the lectures as you’ve suggested. Who did you have for 100 and how did you feel about the course?
