Any Experience With edX Courses? Need Help

DS signed up for an edX course that said it was self paced. After enrolling the dashboard says to earn a certificate the course must be completed by May 20th. Impossible to do a 10 week course in 9 days. This was his first time signing up so he did not realize there were deadlines on self paced courses. Emailed edX but they say they will need 7 to 10 days to respond. Should he unenroll or just take the course without the certificate? Any advice on how this works would be appreciated!!!

Are you sure that it is 2020 and not 2021?

I’ve never had an issue with starting an edX course too late, but to my knowledge the course should reopen at the beginning of a new term. I’d assume that this would be different depending on the course.

I’d recommend unenrolling and rejoining if it is offered again. If he’s unable to get a certificate, then I really see no point in taking the course. However, if he just wants to take the class for the fun of it, then I think it just depends on if he wants to start it now or not. He can always find a way to document his progress separate from the online course, and he would just have to re-enter this data if he re-enrolled in a later term.

Also, depending on the course, it may be possible to complete it if he isn’t having to balance it with school. I was able to complete a course in under two weeks (it was super interesting) while still in school & playing sports, so he could definitely try.
Hope this helps!! :))

If you don’t mind me asking, what class is he looking at?

While I’m not certain, I’d say that’s unlikely. May 20th would make sense to be the end of the spring term, and as far as I know, courses don’t typically last an entire year.
