I’m just wondering- on a scale of 1 to 10, how difficult do you find the Andante Pastoral and Scherzettino by Paul Taffanel?

i haven't actually worked on it yet, but I have the music... did you send this on your CD? i'd say about 7.5/8 (but that's only by reading through it... i could be wrong).

No, the real question is how hard is it to play Carmen Suite No. 1 (No. 5 Les Tor

Can anyone suggest a variety of music that would be about a 9?

And how many pieces/ minutes do you record? I'm thinking of sending in a CD later (early February).

I sent in one about 15 minutes. The repertoire included Carmen Fantasy. I know I know, it is an easy piece, but I absolutely LOVE the fantasy of the music.

suburbian --
For Andante Pastoral and Scherzettino by Paul Taffanel, I would say about 5/6. It is moderately difficult.

If you want a 9, I would go about a "show-piece." Say, for example Ibert Concerto. Now that is hard. I almost sent it in, but if you send it in and can't play it musically, then what's the point? I think most show-pieces are like this. They are really difficult to play (usually not the fingering) and people just play them to show that they can play a difficult piece, but this doesn't mean much.

If you want to send in a CD for college application, I would recommend the standard repertoire. A movement from Baroque (I highly recommend the Partita in A Minor by JS Bach), a movement from Classical Period (Most people would say Mozart Concertos D or G, but I would recommend D, because G is just.. awfully typical of Mozart), a movement from the 19th c or the Romantic Period (Any one from the Moyse "blue book" is fine, although Chaminade is being really overused in auditions.. hm.), and one from the 20th c or the Modern (I would recommend Isang Yun -- all of his pieces are at LEAST 8 in 1-10 ratings, but they don't have that "show-piece" feel; ***ushima -- his pieces are fairly difficult, but manageable; Ibert, Sancan, Poulenc -- all absolutely beautiful masterpieces, but some of them might fit under "Modern/Romantic" so be careful to show different styles) would suffice your repertoire. If you are thinking about an easier modern piece, then Varese's Density 21.5 would be VERY manageable. Also Berio is nice.

I would say the general rule for auditions/recordings are 10-20 minutes.

Hope this helps

Hm.. I wonder why F. U. K. ushima is censored. It is a composer's name.

i also sent in a CD-- but i really don't think that a "show piece" is necessary.. sure it better be difficult, but if it shows mature musicianship, then why not send it? i sent 1st mvmt of bach's sonata in E Minor, 2nd movement of Mozart's Concerto in G Major, and Hungarian Pastoral Fantasy (like the carmen-- not that hard, but it's my favorite song EVER!)

Good selection.. but, what do I know anyhow :)

suburbian-- let us know how your CD comes out.
