Some people have been telling me that college is too big for dances but I've also heard about a frosh formal...

Yeah there is a frosh formal.

the greek organizations have formals
and some of the residences (ive heard FroSoCo has its own?)
i dont know about others.

Frats and sororities have formals every quarter, and each class year has its own formal once a year. Some club sports will also have its own formals. There is also boat dance, which basically requires formal attire too.

I assume the OP is talking about any dance where you’ll look extremely out of place freestyling.

Monthly ‘Jammix’ - Both casual and formal dances. 3 hours. 2 dollars. First Friday each month. Courtesy Richard Powers.

Occasional ‘Unjammix’ - Like Jammix, except with difficult dancing music to encourage thinking. Also inexpensive. More Richard Powers.

The annual ‘Viennese Ball’ is split into two rooms - one Swing, one Waltz. More than $50 for the night, unless, for example, you’re a performer or something like that (which, honestly, is not unrealistic). It is organized by students, and is the most formal dance I think we have. Student run.

Annual ‘Big Dance’ runs through many different kinds of dance. Organized by the Dance Department. Again, not pricey. The best value for your money, as it goes until 6 AM-ish. Yes, I said AM.

Contrary to what you’d think from the way people dress up, Frosh Formal and Boat Dance are freestyle events. I suspect that Senior Formal is a more stylized event, and I know frosh and juniors who went at the request of seniors. If you’re just looking for a big dance, Dance Marathon is the 24-hour-capstone for ver visible anti-AIDS fundraising. The great thing about our social dance classes is that they make partner dancing popular - you’ll occasionally see or do it at these less stylized dances.

With the possible exception of Dance Marathon, everything on this list is easily date material, in case that was your aim.

Oh ok. Yeah that was helpful! Thanks everyone!

And well, my aim really was just any dance where you dress up and find dates. My school only has freestyle (does that mean grinding?) dancing and the only thing formal about “formal dances” is the whole pictures, dinner, dance, and party process.

Sounds like at Stanford, I’ll have to learn how to dance for reals. No more full body wiggles.

There are parties every weekend that cater to the public palpitators. People dress decently for those. Given the occasional sighting of “clothed copulation” dancing, I’d guess some people go with romantic interests, although I don’t know if those would be dates.
