After looking through ratemyprofessors.com, I noticed that every Math 220 teacher mentioned at UIUC is horrible. Unfortunately, I registered for Calculus and I don't know who my teacher is yet. Are there any good math profs you can have?

...nope! yet again they add and get rid of 1 or 2 every year so there might be a new one you might get lucky with.

There's that 1 Hindu/Indian Calc 234 professor lol. I forgot his name but his accent is funny.

But the TA's are who you want to worry about. There can be some real bad TA's and many TA's tend to be of foreign descent. I know all 3 TA's for Calc 234 were either chinese or korean.

So is it possible to get an A with a good TA but a bad prof?

its possible to get an A with a bad TA and a bad prof.

i had just that, and I dropped calc 220 first semester.

I'm taking it over the summer at a community college which doesnt start for 2 weeks and does end before U of I starts, so I would STRONGLY suggest doing that if you can find a community college that still has classes open.

Another question for you guys.....I'm in a little bit of a pickle. Im debating whether to transfer my calc 1 and calc 2 credits down to u of i. The problem is I got a B in calc 220, which is worth 5 credit hrs. I got an A in calc 235 which is 3 credit hrs. I'm feeling that I dont want to start off my freshman year with that gpa. On the plus side, I do knock off all my quant 1. So what do you guys think I should do?

if you're thinking about taking 220 on campus don't count on above a B. id transfer the credit.

Yeah I think its more sensible to transfer the credit. Thanks Taffy

Uh oh I don't like the sound of this thread. Is there seriously not a single good Calc professor for freshman year ?

I found out that I have Whittlesey and I heard that she's a good teacher!

professors aren't really important in those types of classes

They don't grade the tests, they don't come up with the weekly quizzes, all they really do is teach the lessons and write up the tests. In a 200-300 person class, the professor itself is not what makes or breaks your grade.

But Calc 234 was a lot easier than the AP Calc I took in high school where I got C's and failed half the tests.

But in Calc 234, I got an A- and got A's on a couple of the tests. Big difference.

Is Calc 234 easier than 220?

^ Looks like, since you need a 60% on the Aleks to get into 220, but only a 40% to get into 234.

Yea, Calc 220 is for Engineering while 234 is more for Business related stuff. But I heard 220 was quite a bit tougher. It just kind of depends on your situation and major.

I'm hoping to major in finance... Looks like Calc 234 was the class for me.

if im in the business class does that mean i can just take business calculus instead of 220?

check your major's requirements, but generally for business you can take business calc.

thanks but i dont want to start a new thread, but how hard is it to double major in finance and accounting?

hard, you need 154 hours.

I'm planning on majoring in a Science related major. (Not exactly sure which one yet..) Should I take Calculus 220 or 234??
