Greetings, I have a quick questione well maybe not to short. My question is i currently have a 2.7 Gpa at my Local community college and I’m in need of some advice in how to bump up my Gpa?Btw I’m trying to transfer to San Diego State Or UcSb for Business and I’m planning to take 6 classes in Cc to bump up my Gpa than the others at a University so, with that being said will those 6 classes help me bump my grade again I have a 2.7 Gpa oh and one more question does being in the military increase the percentage of being accepted into a university from transferring in California?
Military definitely helps.
We need more info on your grades. Are they old grades, like grades from prior you serving? How many units do you have total? Do you have any sort of upward trend with your grades? Do you have any failing grades that can be retaken?
If you don’t have a ton of units, it could be relatively easy to get your GPA up. If you have 100 semester units (as an example), it would be really difficult to bring your GPA up. So, specifics are kind of important for you to be helped.
Are you at a cc in San Diego? SDSU can be really difficult to get into from outside the area especially for business. My D was admitted, but had a 3.93 GPA when she transferred and in the end chose UCSD instead. My D knew people in her business classes at cc that did not get into SDSU with a 3.5 GPA. You need to make sure you have some schools on your list that admit with lower GPAs when you transfer. I’m not trying to discourage you, but some schools are very difficult to get accepted to.
not trying to be an ass here but, doing better in your classes is the best way to improve your GPA.
If you have any Ds or Fs, re-take the course and replace the grade.
Pick your classes carefully so you have a balanced and manageable workload.
With your current GPA, your best shot for a transfer is probably your local CSU or one of the non-impacted campuses like Monterey or San Bernardino.
I agree with some of what’s said above, but your military service is a big advantage. You are a non-traditional student that can bring a unique perspective and background to the campus, and campuses want you as a veteran.
A lot of this would depend on your specifics those. What makes up your GPA? A bunch of old, bad grades from before you served and much better grades from after you served? If so, that’s not a terrible situation to be in. If you have failing grades, those can be beneficial because you can replace them.
I had some bad grades early on in my education (prior to serving) but got into the top business program in the state, and the #2 in the country because of my academic record when I got out. It still wasn’t amazing, but it was good enough. Depending on your specifics (which you’ve failed to share), I would absolutely pursue any school that you’re interested in. Have realistic backups in mind, but really put yourself out there.
65 units and i left to bootcamp with those units i need 2 classes to attain my associates degree and 6 more classes for my bachelors which I can take 4 in cc
I actually appreciate a former military member as yourself in informing me and helping me out and I agree be more realistic with myself if I get accepted cool if not have a backup plan incase with that being said military member also benefit in the education system?
“with that being said military member also benefit in the education system?”
Are you asking how it’s a benefit? If so, for one, a lot of top schools want veterans. You need to find a way to get your GPA up, but veterans are desirable for numerous reasons. That is a big advantage.
In California, veterans get priority registration so you get the classes that you want and at the time slots you want.
Being a veteran helps with internships … with scholarships … and obviously your schooling is already paid for with the GI Bill.
Thank you very much for the information and answering my question regarding my gpa also.
Thank you @briank82 @Cristano85 for serving our country!! I’m sure you’ll get into UCSB, and not only SDSU, but also UCSD as well.
@Cristano85 - If you haven’t done so, I encourage you to reach out to SDSU’s Barron Veterans Center with your questions. I don’t know if being in the military will give you a bump in points with your application, but the Veterans Center can give you quite a bit more SDSU-specific advice for active duty/veterans than you might receive here on this forum, especially since most of the staff are veterans. Also, you might want to contact the Student Veteran Organization on campus. They are a popular group, and are very active on campus. Here’s the Veteran’s page on the school website (there’s also a link to SVO’s really busy Facebook page) - http://arweb.sdsu.edu/es/veterans/.
