any movie theaters and malls near campus?

title says it all

The closest I would say is Bay St. in Emeryville. You can get there by taking BART a couple stops to MacArthur and then taking the bus. Or you can take the F bus straight there. It's a nice little outdoor plaza with shops and restaurants like Barnes and Nobles, California Pizza Kitchen, Elephant Bar, PF Changs, Gap, etc. It's also right next to Ikea and there are two nice movie theaters there.. AMC and Century.

Other than that, you'd probably want to go to SF, which is a short BART ride away. They have the huge Westfield mall with lots of shops. And there are also plenty of other shops scattered around Union Square area, all a short walk from the BART station. And there is a Century on top of Westfield and the Metreon theaters are very close by as well.

There are three movie theaters that are in the immediate vicinity of campus. Check a movie site like http://movies.yahoo.com, or http://www.fandango.com, and enter zip code 94720 to find more information on the theaters.

The California Theater (which doesn't usually show the big blockbuster movies, but instead the smaller releases or documentaries, but that's just a generality) on Kittredge & Shattuck is literally a minute walk from the west border of campus. Just down the street from the California theater are two other theaters.

The United Artists 7, on Bancroft & Shattuck, is the theater that usually shows the blockbuster flicks, and I believe they also have midnight showings of older movies (e.g. Clockwork Orange, some movies from the 90's, etc.)

There's another movie theater on Shattuck, just a block north of the UA7. I forgot the name, but it too doesn't really have the "big blockbuster" movies. I saw Half Nelson there, if that gives you an idea of what kind of movies they usually show. Again, a quick search of movie listings will give you details. Hope that helps.

If you have a car, Hilltop (in Pinole) is probably just as convenient. It's about a 30 minute drive away, AND:

there's an In-N-Out there (or nearby, at least)

Generally people go to the United Artists theater on Shattuck which is about 5 blocks away from campus. As for malls the Westfield mall in SF is amazing...no other malls around comes close. It's also surrounded by tons of stores and about a 20-minute walk from Pier 39. I'm not even a girl and just thinking about shopping there makes me drool.

Another vote for the Westfield mall. The BART goes from Downtown Berkeley (1 minute from west campus) to Powell St., which happens to be on the concourse level of the mall. Doesn't get much more convenient than that!

There's a Century on the top floor (and the Metreon, with IMAX, is just a block away from the mall; it has its own shops, too), but like others have said there are 3 movie theatres in Downtown Berkeley.

The In-N-Out in Oakland is actually a bit closer than the one in Pinole if you're counting miles. But they both should be around the same drive.
