Any "non-traditional" UC transfers out there?

Non-traditional here as well! 28yo (29 next month) female vet. No kids, one divorce…yikes. I don’t find it hard to fit in or get along with the younger students at cc. They are usually shocked at my age and background though…just something I had to get used to. I can be a little embarrassed to reveal my age because I don’t want to be treated differently, but that’s my own personal insecurity and I have yet to actually be mistreated. Basically, don’t stress on the age thing, if someone doesn’t relate to you because of it…maybe you can learn from each other :)

Edit: Oh, I applied to UCSD, UCSC, UCLA, UCB, SFSU.

@lolisaguila: Yep, time management is pretty essential for me. For most of my CC career I was also maintaining a full time white collar job. It helps that I have a very understanding wife (who already has her degree).

You wanna see nontraditional? There was a like 85 year old guy in my programming class once lol

Are you sure he didn’t just wander in there thinking it was the Country Inn or something?

25 year old vet here. I am an engineering major (EE). I applied to UCSD. At CC, I have met many similar students to myself who are also transferring to UCs. I don’t have trouble fitting in or conversing with the younger students, but I definitely find myself forming stronger relationships with classmates of similar circumstance. I go to a CC with a large veteran population (SD Mesa), so I’m sure there will be an adjustment period once I transfer. Ultimately though, I have a great group of friends outside of school (former co-workers), so I’m less concerned with the social aspect of college and more concerned with getting a quality education.

Good luck to all of you on your acceptances and I’m sure I’ll see some of you at UCSD next fall. I’ll just look for the ladies with varicose veins and the dudes with receding hairlines. :)

@UChopeful2010: I’m currently at Mesa too. SD Mesa represent!

I currently attend UCSC and I can tell you from experience, I’ve seen quite a few “non-traditional” students. In my math class, I know there are 2 students who are about 40-50 years old. There is also one student in that same course who is in his early 60’s (older than our professor). I also TA’d for an econ course and one of my students was older than my own mother.

To tell you the truth, these students fit right in. On the first day they might get the usual strange glances, but those are gone literally after the first week. It’s not high school anymore, so I rarely see problems in these cases.
