Transfer to UC at 32 years old

Went back to school a couple years ago, my grades are great and I plan on transferring to a UC next fall, but I'm 32. Do they look at this as a negative or are they indifferent to it?

No. Age is not important. You do have a good chance.

^ age is not the problem, the problem is that do you have a passion about it? if yes, age? it doesn’t matter. You should not have mention it.

No they don’t care. A friend of mine is in his early 30s too, and he got in without much of a problem. Some of the older people i’ve noticed tend to stick together with one another, but it depends on the person, and everyone i’ve met is friendly, so you shouldn’t have a hard time wherever you go.

Hi Yosh. No worries. I am a 58 year old woman and I am transferring to Davis next fall. I have submitted a TAG so I will have my admission guaranteed. Both of the transfer counselors at my cc and both Davis Reps I have met say age is a non issue. In fact, they say it can work in my favor as my situation is so unique. I plan to mention my age in my personal statements as I have a lifetime of experience. I have owned a business, I have to daughters, one graduated from Lewis & Clark and the other is a senior at UCLA, and I have worked in the classrooms, volunteered at events and am a board member for our public schools foundation. I have spent the last 20 years instilling the love of learning in my two daughters and now that they are out of the house it is my turn. One rep from Davis said that I am just the type of student they love to have there. I am learning and going to college because I want to and because I love learning.

Since you are “only” 32 you may not want to mention your age but you must find an opportunity on the application to talk about what you have been doing while not in school. Those experiences could have been very valuable experiences that you can write about and could help your chances. Overall what is important is your GPA (I have a 4.0 in my transferable course) and that your major prerequisites are done or mostly done. Don’t let your age be an issue because it is not. Your experience and maturity should actually put you ahead. Good Luck!

If you are planning to join a fraternity then you might have problems – unless if they don’t mind to have an older gentleman in the party scene.

But no, it is never to old to attend a university!

It’s NEVER too late.

Hi Yosh42, I am around the same age. I met with a UC Coordinator a few months back and she said that my age would work in my favor because I am unique (compared to the 18-20 somethings applying). She said that I should definitely mention my age in my personal statement and I will.

Of course, I have met some UC coordinators who are full of *****, this one seems pretty cool and I don’t think I have anything to lose and maybe something to gain! Good luck!

Honestly, I only see it affecting you in choosing your friends, which isn’t a bad thing. I mean, you might not fit into a group of freshmen and I’m not sure you would want to. Even college is host to its share of morons, and the younger they are the dumber they usually are. Even at 22, I surprise myself remembering what an idiot I was at 18. So I suppose we’ll all probably be avoiding the youngest crowds (for the most part).

Lots of kids are going to college b/c it’s what they know, it’s what their parents want, and have little interest in their majors (I think this one is why so many people take undergrad studies as a joke, it’s like people are opening up Chinese phonebooks at random and saying ‘THAT ONE’).

Hopefully you know what you want.

Age is not a problem, BUT you should have a good reason why you weren’t in school for the last 10 years or so. They don’t want to hear that you were wasting time.

Age is not a factor at all, in my Calc 2 class right now there’s a guy who’s ~40ish and going back to school, just be prepared to be surrounded by people a fraction of your age.

I am 31 and finishing up my last year at community college and plan on transferring to a UC. Everyone is different and it is never too late to learn something new or try a new career.

I could have stayed in the military but I found that I really want to be an academic and use more of my mind than my hands. I will be applying as an applied math major.

I’m 30 and attending UCD. In my classes, there are students in their mid 20’s and 30’s. In my stat 108 class there is an ex-marine who is definitely not in his early 20’s. Age is nothing. I have even found the students at UCD to be pretty cool and laid back when I tell them my age. It’s like, “oh cool your an older student, hey, did you do all the homework, I’m stuck on this problem”, type attitude which makes assimilation easier and helps you work with others. Of course you do have your slackers/cheaters but you will be able to pick them out very easily.

Good luck with things yosh, I’m sure you’ll be just fine.
