I too was accepted into Willamette with a nice merit scholarship. 4.0 weighted GPA, 2040 SAT. Not too surprised.

However, they've been extremely annoying. I got my acceptance on February 4th, the day of the regular application deadline (I applied regular decision, submitted early Jan). And ever since, I've been getting phone calls and e-mails and weekly mail from them. They just keep saying how qualified I am and other ego-stroking stuff. It's actually a turn-off at this point.

Liesel
When D applied back in 2006 she too got several calls and letters soon after applying. Her stats were similar (a bit higher) than yours. She did not find it annoying at all and they actually increased her grant in one of those letters. She is now a very happy junior there.

shrugs Her opinion.
I mostly feel like they're sending me these letters because they're trying to get more good students in these rough economic times. Eh.
Sadly, Willamette is only #4 on my list.

Liesel if the firendly and open environment is not your cup of tea please enjoy yourself in another forum. D finds the personal touch from WU endearing but then again we are simple people from a rural community and are used to such things.

I was just telling a co-worker yesterday that Williamette has been the best communicator of all my D's applied schools. D has swapped emails with a student to get several of her questions answered about the residential life, food, etc.

We're going to visit next week! So excited to see the place for real.

Liesel, you seem to have applied to several UCs. I attended the one that rejected you. It is very different than Willamette as are the others you did get into (congratulations). I think you would be happier at one of the larger schools.

Anyone know when RD are notified? I'm not really sure about this school since I don't know much about it... what's it like? I'm afraid I can't stomach anymore information on websites since they seem to be... somewhat similar.

lilly: what would you like to know? If you have specific questions than I am sure CSleslie will do her best to answer as her D will b a Sr. next year I think.

I understund how the schools all start looking alike on line but I can tell you how WU rates on the follwing criteria important to my D

science curriculum: Top notch for an LAC. Incoporates lab and field work with small classes and excellent professors

friendliness: Really wonderful. D did an overnight there and was pretty much adopted by a dozen kids on her host's floor. People are "chill" and it seems to attract a very bright and very laid back group. Professors seem invested in teaching the students. It's the sort of school where a professors will notice and offer assistance if you are missing class or if your grade takes a down turn.

Attractiveness: The school is very green in attitude as well as in landscaping. It really is a lovely campus with red brick buildings lots of green space and a stream that runs through campus.

Athletics: It's an active campus and intramurals are important to many students on campus. D's hosts were involved in crew and tennis and she was roped into an IM basketball game.

Arts: She wants to continue playing music for fun and being involved in theatre and for non-majors there are loads of opportunities for both.

Her choice will come down to money but if WU offers her the best package our family will enthusiasticly support her choice to attend.

BTW where else were you considering? My twin daughters have explored several other schools in the PNW and if you would like our take on any of them pm me or let me know here in this fourm.

I've applied to lots and lots of schools out of inexperience and to see which gives me the best aid (which will unfortunately be the deciding factor). So far I was accepted to NYU (bad aid), UC Davis (even worsse), Agnes Scott College (in GA, seems excellent for aid), Wofford (South Carolina, also good aid) and yesterday to Smith. I haven't heard back from Williamette yet, but it seems like a warm, dedicated college - exactly what I need as an international student, I think.

I'm thinking of majoring in psychology - anyone know if W's department is good?

historymom - Thank you so much, by the way! That was super-helpful and most importantly, not a promotional pamflet... I'll cross my fingers for good aid for your D (and me, hopefully...)

I have to say, I'm pretty floored at how parents are involved in this board. My parents know my general plan and are informed about acceptances and rejections only...

I got in with a very nice 10K Merit money offer last week. Still waiting for aid package. I don't know why i got merit. The only unique thing I offer is rowing, and I don't know if I will.

Ah, I'm still waiting to hear back. I've had pretty much no contact from them whatsoever yet. My brother is an alumni who had nice scholarships and hung out with the international students, and my grades were always better than his (though he's 6 1/2 years older). I haven't been strongly considering heading back to the PNW for college as much as I love the region, although if they offer me a nice aid package then I may consider going. I actually lived on campus for a week in his frat, it's really nice and I enjoyed it.

Hello Simply Lily. Sure hope you get a chance to visit the Willamette campus. It really helped sell itself to my D. As historymom said, D is finishing up her junior year there (in psychology actually) and I have enjoyed watching the progression through the years (from I really miss my home, family and friends to the current "I never thought I'd miss Salem and wow do I have some great friends here" attitude :D The classes are challenging (got her first C ever :( ) and interesting - all, not just the psych ones. In fact her Spanish classes seem to be her favorites. Think her study abroad helped to cement that one. W is small enough that the international students are easily integrated. Very large Hawaiian contingent as well (not int'l I know, but help give a more worldly appeal). Just saw a video about one of the frats (she has lots of friends in that particular one - her IM basketball buddies) and the dance program they did. Very cute and I especially liked the matching ties and converse shoes. This is a group of kids who study hard and play hard. I know she is getting an all around great education as well as social time at college. If they can help her find a job, I will be one happy camper!

BTW, Liesel, one can hardly be a stalker on cc. When one makes an uncomplimentary comment, it is very commonplace for searches of other posts to be made to see possibly why the comment was made. All it takes is a couple of clicks. There are no secrets here (just like facebook) ;)

Heard back today in snail mail in Wisconsin. 10k Merit offer, no package yet. It's a nice offer, something I'll have to strongly consider. My brother was excited enough to hear I was accepted. It's great that I already know the campus and such, I hope my favorite spots to chill at are still around.

Thank you. :) There were three spots I enjoyed while I was visiting my brother: One was in the main library, second floor I believe. A little circular alcove that was great for just curling up on the couch and reading through books while he was in class. Another was outside in a zen garden area, I'd remember visually where it is but I'm assuming it was probably outside of an art building. Lastly, right on the lawn in the middle of campus by the stream! I always loved how it runs right through campus.

I think you are in luck! I left my D reading in the library in a spot that sounds just like the one you described, I'm not sure about the garden but the star trees are a great place to just sort of regroup and the big lawn with the Mill Stream is fully intact with Adirondack chairs for whomever grabs em.
