I am only a sophomore and yet I receive heaps of mail from numerous colleges throughout the US - Brown, Pudget Sound, Boston, etc... Does anyone else have this? I know it's because I filled in a circle on my PSAT scantron allowing colleges to contact me. But why do they contact students (sophomores)? Are they actually selective in who they contact or do they just contact as many as possible?

Usually it's random and they just want to get the word out about their college...but don;t ignore something like an Ivy contacting you

yep, it's pretty general. Soph year I got a 200 on PSAT's and they still contacted me.

my friends who do badly in school received mail too.

however, it's awesome to receive mail, and it makes you feel special that colleges want you:]

Send back the little cards of the universities that you think you may want to apply to (throw away dumb colleges) , and keep the brochures of the colleges you like in a folder. It'll get fat by junior year, I promise !!!!

You're on the right track!

everyone gets them, doesnt mean anything, jsut trying to lure potential students.

The good news EASD is that you will get so good at tearing the junk mail you
will shortly be able to tear it up without opening and still get rid of the
personal info on the letter so you can recycle instead of trash it.

;)

I remember this year, every Ivy except for Princeton and I think Columbia sent me their application. I was like, "Yay!" even though it was nothing. I did end up applying to two of them.

What does University of Suoth Carolina want my son so badly? I haven't seen a lot of other state schools recruiting OOS. Makes sense though, to get the OOS tuition.

Haha, Nickel Xenon, Princeton was the only ivy that sent me their application. But to the OP, yeah it means nothing, but it's a good place to start the college search (although the letters do get pretty annoying by your senior year).

jaja, I remember I used to get heaps of junk mail from many colleges like Harvard, Boston, UNC.....

We saved a bunch in a box and will be having a large bonfire on April 1st. Friends will be bringing their suddenly useless files/brochures over. S'mores all around.

Most colleges "buy" names from places like the PSAT, ACT and College Board and then send mass mailings (even at the small college I work at--we send 50,000+) to try to find interested students. My recommendation would be to send back cards to schools that seem interesting to you--which might mean a little additional research! Once you send one of those cards back, you're in the database for life! :-)

So if I do send back the letter to a college I want to go to, they will have my info? Personally, I want to go to Northwestern..if I get mail from them and I return it, do I have a better chance of getting in?

Thanks everyone :)
I like the bonfire idea, hahah
