Any One From The Waitlist Hear???

Got your school - The Governer's Academy (formerly Governer Dummer's). Rolling admissions and a 75th percentile average SSAT.

Saw that one in my search before...will check it out..thanks..

Burb Parent mentioned Pomfret which is where my daughter will be going. We really like the school and it does have an Episcopal history. Based on everything we have heard from admissions though they had a record year for applications and it was definitely the most competitive year they have had. Small school also. They are only looking for 55-60 kids total for 9th grade for next year. Probably unlikely that they have spots.

It was almost IMPOSSIBLE for me to get any feedback...very frustrating...not one had anything to say but that they ADORED her...she has everything--arggh...they told me that to get feedback in a few weeks I could talk to an admissions comittee for that grade in couple weeks in one school...thought the same thing and last year asked for feedback when she got wait listed for 8th and got nothing...just too many applicants...odd

thanks...really appreciate the group understanding here...it does help to know that there are lots of other schools that people think are worth it other than the top ones..

As biffgnar has stated, Pomfret will be near impossible with their app pool this year. This year by far appears to be the most competitive year for Boarding School admission. They are on top of the world right now.

As a parent, I should have planned better for this event. LoL I do believe that the applicant pool will begin to drop over the next five years

Just found out about a hockey friend of my daughters who got into Canterbury off the waiting list (she was rejected by Pomfret to tie back to my prior message). I don't know much about that school, but maybe they have spots.

This is a phenomenon that is recent- in the old days sibling policies dictated that it was bad form for a qualified sibling to not make it...I was horrified when i first heard of this -especially if the sibling is roughly equivalent as an applicant- my uncle said to me if they need a TUBA player than that could be it...lol...
Glad she likes it...we even had a teacher there lobby for us and it did not help today's news change to an accept...I hope your second daughter found/finds a good alternative...that is the one situation I have seen that I felt could be worse than this...we have a younger daughter too so this is helpful for her if not my older one..

Canterbury........I believe Paris Hilton attended Canterbury. I also know that it's in Ct and is Catholic.

There is a good match school for lots of great kids. It is just finding one where they need your child.

Looking back at your D's resume, she seems very well rounded, but there seemed to be no special "hook" (arts, athletics, leadership, etc.) that said (in neon lights) "we have to have THIS student". And unfortunately I guess, there were too many of those kids with neon signs at the schools your D applied to.

Waitlistman, yes my daughter has moved on and found an alternative. You never know these days. Frankly D #2 academic credentials are just as strong if not stronger versus D#1. We all must remember that BS look at many things when choosing students.

Prepparent,

I think we often read into the stats way too much and underestimate the random bad luck element. Don't know who interviewed D #2 vs D #1, but that could have been the entire issue. Sometimes you get an interviewer that clicks; Sometimes you don't.

And I agree that it is bad form not to take in siblings who solidly fall within the normal range of applicants.

Glad to hear that you have moved on successfully, though.

Probably a good topic for another thread about never knowing when there is a joker in the deck.

yes- we have been told its an art and not a science..as an germanic engineer that makes this all the more maddening..academics should be the core...and if a kid has lots of extracurriculars and volunteer work like mine and two interviewers practically gushed over her after the interview--well tis perplexing...maybe we were blacklisted-lol

goaliedad, yes the "wild card" lol ironically it was the same interviewer and we know her well. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm We have moved on and everything is just wonderful

haha yeah paris hilton did go to canterbury but she didnt stick around for very long, her brother also went to berkshire and got thrown out last year for drugs

I would have liked to have attended her school but for the wrong reasons..lol

heard from choate their full.
sux.

"Supposedly this past year they had 120 beds and sent out only 120 acceptances."
I would think if this were true, than they would probably be taking a couple of people from the waitlist.

Maybe 2. Its not a perfect science and believe it or not, there is a method to their madness. One might have a better chance hoping that a student will not want to return next return. Time is up and believe returning students also have to put down a deposit for next year. It will be interesting to see if someone makes it off the Deerfield waiting list and lets us know here at CC.

Jumping in here -- you are all great people trying to help one another. Very heartwarming! D'yer, Prepparent, goaliedad, burbparent, great job! And great insight!
