Itachirumon- i am just wating here and some reason i am getting nervous considering that this is the month that decisions come out. I am hoping for the best.

^ I think you’re going to be fine. You’re GPA is awesome. If I have to appeal I have a lot of things going for me. I did a program at UCLA last summer so I could have UCLA adcoms write me letters. Just hoping they review my app tho. haha

@Ella 89: These are my Grade trends

Fall 2007 - 3.50
Spring 2008 - 3.50

You’re a loser.

Hello everyone!

I was on the board as a lurker last year, but decided to post later on.

I am now on my Spring Quarter here at UCLA, as a Psychobiology major (essentially have to take the major classes as the Psychology major…plus I have a bunch of friends as Psychology majors).

If you have any questions, leave them for me below!

I have a ton of questions…could I email you perhaps?

I don’t think you could PM me for some reason…sorry, lol.

Just post them below, I have some time. I’m sure other people have the same questions.

PS-I will NOT “chance” anyone. sorry. :/

Yayyyyyyyyyy! How much different is the course load compared to CC? Whats the testing format in your classes? Do you have hw and things like that or is it mostly bigger assignments/tests? How hard is it to find research opportunities?

Thanks so much!

How hard is it to get a RA position? How hard it is to get a “mentor” type relationship with a prof. ? Is it super competitive? Are classes on a curve for the most part? Did you have to take stats for psych after you transferred? How do you find the quality of instruction to be? Do you like most of your professors ?

-thanks so much!!

1) It is very different. Because Psychology is SUCH an impacted major, if you’re not dedicated, you’re getting out. I’m not sure if you’ve all heard about “Psychology 100A&B”? Yeah…those are a PAIN. Compared to CC, to be honest, I didn’t have to work very hard to get a 4.0 in CC, so I wouldn’t know. But it is DIFFERENT. If you’re not used to reading, GET USED TO IT.

2) Testing format depends on the professors. Once you’re in and get enrolled for your fall classes, might I suggest <bruinwalk.com> it helped me prepare for my classes. But I will tell you that most professors are like Final/Midterm and that determines your entire grade for the class. </bruinwalk.com>

3) Something I wish they told me from the START is that you need to get on IT. As in, if you want internships, jobs, etc. get on IT ASAP. Once you decide you’re going to UCLA, dedicate some time to researching the Psychology professors, especially if you decide to go onto Graduate School, this is a MUST. Luckily, I was super lucky and am now working for the Psychology Graduate Department and am interning with a well-known professor here.

No, thanks for the questions, and good luck!

1) If you’re wanting to get an RA position, get to know your OWN RA, assuming you choose the dorms (if you’re interested about that, let me know, or I’ll wait for that thread later…lol). The RAs have this “network” where when they’re leaving they can recommend you. So…I hate to use the word “suck-up” lol, but get to know them and ask them about the process. I have a friend who’s a sophomore and was offered to be an RA, after a tough interview process…lol, and yep!

2) Refer to my answer above. If you want to have a mentor type of relationship with someone, get on it ASAP. Those opportunities won’t come to you, YOU HAVE TO COME TO THEM. This is super important and I can’t stress this enough! If you’re looking to have a relationship with your professors like you do in CC…you’ll be disappointed because it won’t happen. Most/if not all of the professors here at UCLA are busy researching, writing books, etc. and don’t have time for that. You have to approach them.

3) Larger classes are on a curve, Psychology 100 A&B were, but it depends on the professor, again.

4) Psychology 100A is a Statistics course, but I did take a statistics course at my CC. It wasn’t so much difficult, again, that depends on the individual, but I did have to study quite a lot to get an A in that course. Again, bruinwalk is your friend, lol.

5+6) Professors, again, it depends. There is no “standard” professor. Some are bearable and some aren’t. It also depends on the student. I was super scared going into 100A&B because I heard so many horror stories about it. I was thinking “If a student who has been at UCLA all four years failed it, how the eff am I going to do it?!” I stayed focused, formed study groups with my friends, went to my TA’s office hours and I got an A+. Dedication.

Hope it helps!

Don’t mean to hijack the thread or anything, but thought I would share my experiences at UCLA too! I think overall the classes are more difficult, but definitely not INSANELY difficult. If you have developed good study habits at CC you should probably do just fine at UCLA.

Also, the grades for most of the psych classes I have taken have been determined mostly by a midterm and final (which are almost always multiple choice, I have only had one psych class that wasn’t) and don’t have too many other assignments. Except 100B. Which was definitely my least favorite class.

Research opportunities are not hard to find! I emailed a couple of labs that seemed interesting to me last summer and got an interview and offered a position during Zero Week that Fall Quarter. I love working in that lab!

I’m happy to answer other questions as well! I think will be nice to get a few different perspectives!

^
We should start a thread. I remember this time last year for us…HELL. hahaha.

Glad to see you’re doing great. (:
