Hey guys,

I am a Community College student looking to transfer to UCB for Fall 2010. I have a 4.0 GPA and worked upwards of 60 hours a week while attending school part-time. Currently, I am a full-time student who just got honorably discharged from the Navy. I will be applying for Economics.

Are there any former CC students who can discuss their transition to Berkeley? I am mostly looking for commentary on the academic rigors as a Cal student, as compared to CC.

Thanks in Advance

My first semester at Cal, I realized that Community College is a joke. I was not prepared at all. However I adjusted and am doing much better now. Basically, the habits that made you successful at your CC will not make you as successful at Cal. You have to work 10 times harder. Especially in Econ. The classes are curved so you are in competition with everyone in the class. You also have to get use to the way they do things, like the whole GSI thing. Sometimes, they determine your grade, It all depends on the class and professor though.

I can go on but I’m gonna stop right there. Any questions, feel free to post.

CC is a joke. CC was easier than my high school. I, too, worked about 30 hours a week and went full-time. So that’s really good that you have a 4.0 and have a lot of work experience.

Econ is one of the harder majors like MCB. Highly competitive. If you were a slacker in HS and breezed by, you definitely have to hit the books here. Doing the extra studying really determines getting that A or B. Also, stuff is here a lot more theoretical, classes are kind of huge in the prereqs.
