Any Questions at all

I was looking at campus crime statistics on a government website and Harvard numbers were pretty high compared to Duke or Stanford? Any comments?

Harvard is in the middle of a city. The campus is dispersed. I'm not surprised.

Hi. The pre-frosh site says that the Freshman formal requires a tux. True?

hey everyone! It has been a while but I am so happy to have seen some of you guys at Prefrosh- I hope that was an enjoyable experience for all of you...

Crime here- rare but it does happen. We have such a large campus versus other schools and the crime report does report for the WHOLE campus so I am not surprised that it seemed high. Just look at Yale to feel a bit more at ease with crime! lol, jk

Freshman FORMAL- yes, indeed you need a tux and formal wear and females.... there are so many formal things here that you will go to DEFINITELY bring formal and semi formal wear with you here

Keep the questions coming!!!

Actually, many males simply wore suits to the formal. I would say it was a 50/50 split.

Yeah, you can get by in a suit... wouldn't be classy though :-P

Lots of places to rent tuxes around the square. If you're the type who likes to dress up + would attend your house formals, I recommend buying a cheap tux. They're not too expensive, and if you go to the freshman formal + 2 house formals a year, you'll definitely come out ahead over renting.

A question for current Harvard students from a member of the class of 2011:

Do you use your Harvard email address for all email or do you still use a yahoo or gmail account? Are there any disadvantages/advantages to the Harvard email?

I use my Harvard email primarily–accessed through Mac Mail.

Many people have their Harvard email forwarded to a gmail account, which can then "send as" their Harvard email.

Some people use just a gmail/yahoo account, but it's a little bit strange.

Hi John,

I can't speak for everyone, but I find the Harvard email system so buggy, slow, and irritatingly designed that I just set it to forward all the emails to my gmail account.

(I love nearly everything about Harvard besides the email system, though. And welcome!)

I was wondering what everyone thought about Dorm Crew and the Freshmen Outdoors Program. I have to choose between those two. Thanks!

You'll make around $400 doing dorm crew, and spend at least $150 doing FOP... so if money is an issue go with DC (it's hard work, but nothing crazy).

Both programs are great for meeting people/making friends.

Has anyone heard from Harvard on the waitlist?

i read earlier that you play the piano? what kind of awards/credentials did you include in your application? I've played piano for almost 10 years, but i don't have actual awards or anything because we don't have music competitions here in bahrain (in case you're wondering, bahrain is a tiny island in the middle east). Would it be helpful if i made a recording and send it along w/ my application? If i do make a recording of myself playing, i'd like to play Liebestraum 3 composed by Liszt. i also have the option of doing my performer's exam next december, but i would have to travel to Dubai to do it and it would require a lot of persuasion because my mom's against the idea. what do you think i should do? i really want to emphasize my passion for music.
Also, does harvard take special backgrounds into consideration? i'm half Bahraini and half korean and can speak four languages fluently: spanish, korean, english, and arabic.
oh, and one more thing (sorry for asking so many questions but i'm really stressed out and worried) I took my sat korean test last november, but i wasnt feeling well that day and thus couldn't perform up to my potential. My score was a 750 and i do realize that it's an okay score, however, one of my strongest points in my application would be my ability to speak four languages and a 750 isn't that impressive considering the fact that i'm half korean. Should i retake the test or simply focus on my other subject tests?

I did dorm crew... 2 of my roommates for next year and the majority of my friends are from (strangely) Dorm Crew. It is a HECKKKK of a lot of work, but it is worth it in retrospect.

How do Harvard people look? Are there any hot chicas?

Thanks for the head's up! My pre-frosh host liked hiking. Do you get to meet more people at Dorm Crew or FOP?

Sheed-that's kind of a superficial question. Looks are transient, but fun and cute personalities are something people have for a lifetime.

I have been absent quite a lot in the second semester for different conferences, so my grades rn't as great as before, i wonder if harvard will still take it, will I get a final notice in july or august?

I took AP Calc BC this year and probably got a 5 on the AP test. I would like to take the most challenging multivariable calc/linear algebra class which is feasible for me next year. Which class should I take (Math 21a, 25a, 55a, or another class)? And which textbook does that class use? I was going to buy a multivariable calculus book to read with a friend this summer, and so I figured I might as well buy the book I will be using next year. Any info on the class/textbook would be much appreciated.

A 5 on the BC Calc test will NOT prepare you for 25 or 55, because both courses focus heavily on proofs (among many reasons). I'm not a math major so perhaps someone else could better answer the question.

http://www.math.harvard.edu/pamphlets/freshmenguide.html

John–I think you have a few options (placement test, shopping period + talks with advisors should help you choose the right one).

Just take 21a/b. It's a challenging series + fulfills any math prereq you might need for a course in any other field.

Start in 23a (or 25a if you feel up for it), and see how you like proof-based math, knowing that you can drop down to 21a if you want to.

Work hard on proofs over the summer, and if all goes well, go for 25 (or even 55) with more confidence.
