To The Future Harvard Class of 2011

My sincerest congratulations to all of you. If the college admissions process were a game, well, you just won.

I urge you all to come to prefrosh weekend, where you will surely see that Harvard is indeed the greatest university in the world. Although many have tried, no other institution can match the greatest that is Harvard University.

Speaking as a member of the class of 2010, I can honestly say you will love it here.

Welcome home.

As a member of the class of 2010, may I ask if you receive financial aid. If so, may I ask if the offer changed much in your second year. Our offer (class of 2001) is very nice, but I worry that it is an 'inducement offer' and things will change.

Any thoughts are appreciated, and feel free to email me.

Bill

Hi Bill,

As a current sophomore who receives a substantial amount of financial aid, your award will not change every year, unless you have a significant change in your finances. Though tuition is going up at Harvard every year, the amount my family and I are expected to pay has remained the same from last year. Do not worry about "inducement offers"! Harvard does not do that.

Hey, thanks for your reply, I appreciate it.

Is harvard good for you? My son is a an MIT-type as far aswanting to devour applied and abstract math, as well as bio and chem stuff. But he wants harvard or Yale, because he is in love with literature, politics, philosophy etc.

Do you know anyone who is loving gut-wrenching hard science and math there?

Rest assured that Harvard will not disappoint on science and math.

Are you in a concentration like that?

I'm in a softer science (bio), but I know that our math, chem + physics departments are absolutely top notch. One awesome thing about Harvard is the number of options you have for intro classes. There are 4 different tracks for intro multivariable calculus–from the "normal" to the IMO gold medalist! Similarly with physics, there's a premed track, a normal track, and two different advanced/honors tracks. Also tons of cool research opportunities–a kid I know helped build part of a new particle accelerator that was headed to CERN.
