Someone please evaluate the following decision methodology: Many of the aspects of the Claremont Colleges appeal to my D and me. Obviously Pomona and CMC are the two most selective (and maybe most like traditional LACs. Pomona's a reach, but Scripps might be a good alternative. If she were to apply to Pomona ED, and make her RD choice Scripps, would she still have some access to what makes Pomona/Claremont Colleges attractive? I know there's restrictive cross-registration of classes throughout the years. Are the Scripps students so different from Pomona students? She wants to major in bio/microbio/cellular bio, so I had this impression that some of the science facilities are shared among some of the colleges. Right now she's in a co-ed boarding school, with her dorm across campus from the guys' dorms so I figure this might be almost the same thing. But I could be totally off on this thinking. Would appreciate input!

Scripps is a great choice but I would recommend a visit, some students love it, my D did not after spending a night on campus. It is actually one of the prettiest Claremont campuses, with bright students and a quiet campus. Some Pomona students have told me they felt there was more competitiveness amound Scripps students then seen at Pomona but that is heresay so check it out. My S has a classmate from his HS who attends and loves it, my D met some dissatisfied students there during her visit, who did not get into their first choice schools and were unhappy there. I think that influenced her decision to not attend. I believe Scripps and CMC share science programs but will let students add their input. Good luck, all the Claremonts are great choices!

I applied RD as an English/Art wannabe.

Does anyone know when Pomona will be sending out decisions? They don't seem to be doing the whole online decision thing, so I suppose we'll have to wait for the mail?

RD for english as well...

so 99.9% of the class of '10 will major in english. score.

Nah....Never fear. I am majoring in Neuroscience and Comp. Science., and I got in ED 2. So at least some one will be a science major

hehehe, i want to be a math major.

investorscooter - Scripps, CMC, and Pitzer share their science program which they call "Joint Sciences." Harvey Mudd and Pomona each have their on separate science programs. In general, you stick to your own school's program for the intro science classes, but I've had students from other schools in my Pomona organic chemistry and neurobiology lectures and labs.

gnatcire-thanks for info. So if a student's interest is in the related biology majors (biochem, neurosciences, cellular, etc.) you believe that Scripps can be a solid choice? Now it's just convincing her to consider a women's college...

Hm.. well it's really up to your daughter and her preferences. Each Claremont College, with the exception of Pomona, tend to specialize in certain areas. In Scripps's case, it's the fine arts and humanities. I wouldn't apply to Scripps exclusively for their biology program, but if your daughter likes other aspects of the school, then her academic preference shouldn't necessarily be something to deter her from applying, considering the fact that they have the joint sciences program.

add me for neuroscience

btw, i was looking at some of the other claremonts too and going down and even just walking through them and doing a tour really helped to see what they were like and to decide

econ or poli sci for me. i didn't know about it at the time i applied, but their PPE program sounds pretty interesting too.

yea, i know some PPE majors, and although it has a few more major requirements than most other majors, they said they like it bc you're not always taking all your classes in the same department

I'm applying RD, and I'm thinking I either want to do PPE or International Relations with a possible minor in music. I've also applied to Scripps.

I applied RD for International Relations (I applied to CMC too). I also want to study Spanish and Chinese too.

molecular bio anyone?

i want to come out to "LA" to be a movie star...

or at least study stars... astro/physics?

decisions come out april 10...way too long a wait. I know this girl who's going to study mol. bio if she gets in...I put Russian as my major. But will probably be rejected.

on another thread, somebody said that LACs will wait until late next week cause the ivies are sending out stuff this/early next week

didn't we learn in 6th grade math that:

more prestigious - lesser education^2 = ivy league

hoooray to bio and mol bio!

media studies major here.
