Hey guys so I have the AP World History Exam in May of 2016. I’m going to be a sophomore at August (currently i’m in my summer break) and I was wondering how I should study for this exam? In my 9th grade year I got a freaking 3 on AP Human Geography D:. I studied a month and a half before the AP Human Geography exam and took the test and felt confident yet I got a 3. I was wondering if anyone could tell me good tips on studying or even good tips for the exam to get a 5 for AP World History? I bought the Princeton Review AP World History book, and I will have a class for AP World History in my upcoming 10th grade year. Thanks! I really need a 5 to cover up that terrible 3 .
Memorize the essay Rubrics. You can get away with some knowledge if you know the essay rubrics, but if you don’t know the rubrics come test day you are screwed.
Since a majority of you sophomores are taking AP World History, here are my words of wisdom. I just took it and I got a 5. I also got over 100% in this class and here’s why. AP World History is a test of effects, NOT memorization. In each era, make sure you know WHY everything happened, why one event led to the next, instead of what happened. For example, ask yourself, “WHY did the industrial revolution happen first in Britain?” INSTEAD of “where did the industrial revolution first happen?” College Board is trying to test your analyzation skills NOT your random knowledge of random facts. Knowing WHY and HOW everything happened will help you on the MC and the FRQs.
I used this thread as the basis of my studying:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/history-social-sciences/1368644-how-to-effectively-self-study-ap-world-history-p1.html Everything this guy says is true!
Here’s how I studied:
Read the Princeton Review once and did practice tests (don’t worry, the mc is harder than the actual test), binged watch getafive.com three times the week before the test (not advised, spread it out a little more), and watched John Green’s Crash Course several times throughout the year. I studied one month in advancedon’t get lazy, study as early as possible
If you need help, don’t be afraid to ask me. I know I received help from a lot of people on this site and I want to return the favor.
Somebody should also start up an Official AP World History Thread 2015-2016. I had a thread like this for my year, and this was the thread of my life when I took it because you can interact with other students taking it at the same time as you. Good luck to all of you! I hope you get a five!
I would also recommend getafive.com because it is free! It’s a great tool and it thoroughly explains everything!
Hi! I received a 5 on the most recent AP World History exam and earned an A both semesters of my course. The overall exam was a breeze since I personally enjoyed the material of APWH and making connections between the time periods. I think a major portion of the curriculum is, in fact, to make connections and to be able to explain such in the essays. Of course you should review overwhelming themes and content of each region as a refresher and then proceed to make these connections.
I used the Kaplan review book but I believe any review book should suffice as a couple textbooks are used as a source for the test rather than a single one like for AP Biology which means the review book should include details that one textbook may have eliminated such as the Prague Spring period. Its all about the major themes and regions! The class should prepare you if you read most if not all the chapters you are assigned. I admit that I slacked off a bit near the modern era chapters but the exam does not focus as much on the more recent events (I’m talking post-WWII).
Know the format of the essays very well and practice writing such in constricted time intervals. Again, the class should suffice for this. The multiple choice is the biggest joke I have ever seen and you should not spend as much time on this portion unless you need to adjust to the speed and timing. The questions are straightforward, whether you know the material or you don’t.My also school had Shmoop accounts for all of the students and we did a couple of online exams which scored and analyzed your possible AP score. I only answered 30-40 of the questions correctly and Shmoop determined I was on track for a 3 which obviously was ridiculously incorrect. The questions are NOT reflective of the exam and should not be taken into consideration unless for material review.
If you have any other questions I would gladly answer them!
