Hi, I am a undergraduate ( International) student in RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology). I am undecided about my major, which of these 5 majors; International Business, marketing, management, accounting, finance, should i choose if i wish to work in the US after my graduation. Secondly, which university in New York have more network and provide more job opportunities post graduation. RIT, SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Albany, SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Geneseo, CUNY Baruch or any other suggestion.

You may need to reexamine your plan for working in the US after graduation. A lot of companies will not sponsor an international graduate in those areas since there are so many American graduates looking for jobs in those areas now.

which areas or city would you recommend?

All areas in business would be hard for you right now because you are an international student and the companies have plenty of qualified American graduates to choose from since many graduates cannot find jobs.

My daughter recently graduated from SUNY Buffalo and a number of her friends, who graduated with business degrees are having trouble getting into the job market. The American economy is still not doing so well.

As an international student you would be competing against all of those similar American students who are competing amongst each other with stellar statistics. The time involved and the cost alone for a sponsorship for you would make it tough. Most would probably bypass you, to hire a student who wouldn’t need a sponsorship; does that make sense? Yes, even if your stats were stellar, it would be easier to hire someone who didn’t need sponsorship. Sorry, in general, that’s just the way it’s working now.

well that’s sad, anyways thanks for your reply. however, which major would you recommend that is in demand and would give me some hope and should i change university or not?

I think you need to speak to your university’s career counseling center. I’m not an authority in the business world, but I do have friends with children, here (southern California), with GRADUATE business majors, who are working at Fry’s, Best Buy, Home Depot to just make survival money and repay their loans; so maybe it’s different in other parts of the country. DD’s friends in NY have asked her for leads in So. Cal; local companies, IF HIRING, are only hiring local grads from UC’s and Stanford and are uber competitive.

It sounds like you’re trying to just get any job to stay in the US and from what I understand, that is a big NO-No for immigration officials.

You really need to study something that you enjoy and you feel comfortable working with every day. That’s why you need to get some career counseling help. They might have future employment projections at the center. Good Luck!
