Any suggestions for a first-timer's low score? Anyone else with low scores?

I got a very low score on my SAT that I just recieved today, I don't really want to post it, but I'll say it's under 1600. I was extremely suprised and disappointed because I'm a fairly good student (I get A's and B's normally) and have a 3.75 GPA. I'm going to be a senior this coming school year and am not sure exactly where to go from here. I know I need to study hard and retake in the fall of course, but I'm kind of worried about scholarships and stuff, because I am considering a private college. Is anyone else in this boat?! Just the thought of getting a low score makes me feel incredibley dumb, and I'm an alright student!

Hey pressingon!!Even I am sailing in the same boat.I have a pretty good academic profile but scored very badly on the new sat 1840 & I wish to get into a prestigious engineering college.I just don't know what to do.Yeah I need to take it again of course though.
But don't be disheartened as it is not the end of the world.

Hi,
Don't feel dumb. A 3.75 GPA is quite good and illustrates your ability to persevere over three years of H.S. (I'm assuming that you have or will be taking AP classes)
I would suggest taking some SAT prep classes or maybe using some SAT guides (Princeton Review, Kaplan etc...) to improve your score.
Also: consider the breakdown of your scores. If you did outrageously bad in one section, concentrate on that part. If you did equal in all sections, a general review will be good.
Just work towards a score that you want and quit worrying. For the most part, people improve their performance on the SAT when they take it the second time around.
Also, the majority of scholarships place greater weight on your GPA and extracurriculars.
So maintain/increase that stellar 3.75 and keep "pressingon".

Ivyaspirant-
I was in the same situation in january (3.9 gpa but an 1870 SAT).

Don't get discouraged because you're obviously smart. All I did was practice and not let the first score bother me. I went in the second time relaxed and scored 190 points higher than the first time.

hey fweb1125
thanks for the encouragement..I had used PR for preparing this time & I had started preparing around a week before..I guess that was a lapse on my part too..
I am thinkin of taking sat again around november or december..Which material should I refer?? & does taking sat prep classes help boost up scores..

I scored a 1660. I'm a total dumba$$ with my 380v. If only I broke the 400 mark, I would apply to PSU in September and not retake the stupid SAT in October.

Pressingon: you should take the ACT in september. you'll be less pressed for time if you are applying somewhere early, and, even better, it's not controlled by the much despised college board...

memorize all the vocab words in the Barrons book

I have a very low SAT score too but mine's is in writing.

It happens. This was only your first time so I wouldn't sweat it too much. I only got a 1740 my first time. I brought my math up 90 points and my critical reading up 20 without really cracking a book open. Get the Collegeboard Blue Book and start practicing. That's what I plan on doing for October. You'll be fine. You have plenty of time to prepare. Just relax.
