Any Suggestions For Teachers/Classes (Bio Major)

Hi there,
I know this has probably been asked a billion times already, but does anyone have any suggestions

I have heard decent things about Martin for Chem 1A, and Famiglietti for Math2A
any suggestions for Bio 93, and Chem 1B+C, etc, etc...

Thanks A Bunch

Odowd bio 93 you can see some of her demonstrations on youtube.

Also go to websoc.reg.uci.edu and ratemyprofessor.com.

Math 2A Lehman is pretty good too.

I went to ratemyproffesor, but there are soo many there!!! Its crazy haha, but is odowd a strict grader n what not

You have to go to websoc to find your class before you go to ratemyprof.

You’ll find out sooner or later things are either right or they’re wrong. You’ll be fired if you do “part” of your job, there’s no half pay or partial wages. Tests in the sciences are largely standardized and the grading is done by multiple people or a machine.

The questions are simply 1+1=2 not… prove on your opinion the best route to the solution of the identity of the expression 1+1.

^encouraging my friend. haha

how bout busciglio for bio93?

Choose busciglio, odowd is good but her questions are tricky tricky. Avoid janda for chem 1A

This year, it only says Staff for Chem 1A!

i took busciglio for bio, im hoping martin teaches chem, ive heard great things about her

what does it mean if it says staff as a teacher?

Staff means not yet determined which professors will lecture at that time slot

which is better to take: writing 37 or writing 39B?? thanks oh and for a bio major… if that makes any difference? and wats the main difference between the two??
i got out of 39A btw…

37 is a combination of 39A and 39B in one quarter hence intensive writing, so you can disregard that and go straight to 39B

mk…and amount of units doesnt matter? is 13 units good enough for a freshman …being a premed.
also, how would u describe math2b?? im not really good at math, but i have to take it…would u recommend taking it this fall or getting used to uci this quarter and taking later?
thanks.

@watcollege, maybe one more class… if you taken Calc AB in high school, the last half material in high school is taught and some integrals that your teacher might teach you after the ap testing… taking math 2b in the fall makes you ahead, but if you want your math still fresh take it and see how you feel…avoid riley from what I’ve heard…

wat about taking the first year integrated program instead of writing 39b?? is fyip hardd??

janda is fine for chem, i aced his chem 1b class, with literally a 100%. just be good at elementary school math and basic chemistry, you’ll do fine.

a small tip, do not take the easier math/physics classes. instead of physics 3 take the harder calc based 7 series even if it makes your grade lower. also, instead of taking bio stats, you should take multivar calc (2d) or linear algebra (2j) which also fulfill the math requirement.

this way, you are prepared that, in the case you find that you hate bio (and 40% of students do, to the point of switching out) that you’re prepared to go into any other field including engineering, chem, physics, econ or math that would otherwise not take bio majors. you can do english over the summer, just pass and it doesn’t matter, i got B- in writing 39b and c, lower division writing is meaningless and you’ll be trained in scientific writing in 100LB anyways.

just some advice from 4th year bio student.

^wait but wont that B- be bad for ur overall gpa?? soo we shouldnt take writing fall??

Well, just because I got a B- doesn’t mean you will. If you want to go to medical school, then yes, take as little math/physics/chem and as many music appreciation and film studies classes as possible.

Know what you want from Bio though. If you are serious about getting a job in molecular biology, then yes, you don’t need to worry about switching out. But many peopl are not serious about bio jobs because they don’t know what a job in bio means except for doctor, and thus you should try to get the math, physics (7 series, not 3! 3 will trap you in bio!) and chem done ASAP, within first 2 years. that way, if you find out you hate bio (you don’t know until end of 2nd/middle of 3rd year usually), you can transfer out to any major you want any time you want, while it will never hurt since they’re all required anyways and will in fact help you in some upper division bio classes.

The best plan, IMO, is to do: bio 93, chem 1a, math/physics whatever you think is easier q1, bio 94, chem 1b+1lb, math/physics q2, then chem 1c+1lc, math/physics and GE/writing or start on your physics/math whichever you didn/t take, then go for writing/GE in summer school. Not too much pressure, it’ll be easier than high school, 3-4 hours of class per day and 1-2 hours of homework. If you find that bio is exceptionally painful and the math/physics easy, you should consider switching. Without a comparison, or only comparing to GPA booster classes, it’s hard to judge how “fit” bio is for you.
