Any suggestions on what colleges I should apply to?

I’m a rising senior looking to major in political science.
Stats:

  • 3.97 UW and a 4.3278 W GPA
  • Rank 4 of approximately 600
  • 1470 SAT (740 RW, 730 Math, 6/6/6 Essay) (Will take ACT in September)
  • APUSH-4 APGOV-5 APLANG- 5 APCALC-4 (I took AP Physics, but didn’t like the subject, so I don’t plan on reporting it)
  • I’m taking AP stats, micro, macro, comp gov, apes, and lit next year, although depending on how I like the classes, I may not be reporting it
-I’m also going to be taking the math 2 and us history subject tests

EC’s:

  • President of the Political Science Club
  • Founding a Debate Club
  • Social Justice Fellowship with UMich
  • Part of a philanthropy group
  • Founded a program at my school to get immigrants and their families adjusted to school and the community
  • Interned at a few political campaigns
  • Editor of the school newspaper
  • Volunteered all three years of high school at a parochial organization
  • Varsity Tennis and Golf Player

I’m a middle class half-Middle Eastern half-African American female from Michigan. I’m not exactly the biggest fan of religious schools, and I have an idea of what my reach schools are going to be.
Any suggestions?

Ann Arbor comes to mind. Maybe Emory.

U.Michigan is a great university. The people who I have known from there have been very strong. Being in-state should help you with the price, and I would hope that your GPA would make it at least a low match if not a safety.

I have seen a few other cases where a “safety” was also a “really, really top school”, and I think that you are in the enviable position of having one (and of course you earned the GPA part yourself, even if being “in-state” is good fortune).

How much SAT preparation did you do? If you can get this up a bit it might be worth sending an application in the general direction of Harvard or Stanford, if you want to. However, the one person that I knew well who went to Michigan for undergrad and Stanford for graduate school was not convinced that there was any significant advantage to Stanford (other than at the time the Pac 8 was generally beating the Big 10 in Rose Bowl games).

I believe you’re asking us about matches and safeties.

First: always report AP CLASSES that you took. Not doing so would put your acceptance in jeopardy. You must report every class attempted and obviously it’ll be listed on your transcript.
You DO have a choice of reporting test scores.

Second:what’s your parents budget? Cost constraints are probably the biggest factor influencing where students can apply.

Ok, now, on to your question… UMichigan is likely a safety for you. So all you need is another safety you like as much. I think your second safety should be a university that is somewhat different from UMichigan: a LAC ranked 40-60, a smaller public university, a university in or near DC (American would likely be a safety and I’d encourage you to apply both to Douglass scholars and Honors). UMaryland’s honors and scholars programs should also be in contention.
