Lived in a very small city in China for last three years so I can emphasize diversity and perspective in essays - THIS IS A KEY! I KNOW SCHOOLS love people who have "opened their eyes." Please take this into mind, maybe it can boot my chances up a bit. I'm a good writer, so I probably can write a super essay on this topic.

what type of school do you want? Large, small? Urban, Suburban, rural? Public or Private? What major?

I will just throw a couple of names out there

UChicago - reasonable low reach
Cornell - good reach

UMichigan - safe match
Cal-Berkeley - high match (out of state)

UWisconsin - safety
UFlorida - safety

Well, I don't really care what kind of school it is.

But do you think I have a chance at HYPS with a strong essay on my China experience. I'm a US citizen, lived in Bay Area for 14 years, so I'm pretty well rounded in terms of life experience. I'm Asian though. : (

HYPS would be a major reach. You could lower on the Ivy rungs, some good LAC alternatives or some good Tech colleges. Some possibles:
Wash U in St Louis, Carleton, Macalester, Reed, Oberlin, Kenyon, MIT, CMU

look at the LACs that love and actively seek out diversity.

Erin's Dad, why is MIT not a major reach? MIT is almost an impossibility for anyone this year.

What are LAC schools?

liberal arts colleges

Jovenes132, You may be right about MIT being a major reach. I looked at the Math and Science scores and thought they were right in there for MIT (those are about 75%ile) but the verbal are a little low (25%ile). Certainly it is a reach. Still don't know what the OP wants to major in.

You can try for HYPS, but a lot will depend on pulling together an application that grabs their attention. I agree with Erin'sDad- based on what you posted, it is likely not going to grab them enough. U Chicago- yes, sounds like a fit. Cornell, yes. Hopkins, yes. Brown, Dartmouth, and Columbia- maybe. Caltech- worth thinking about. Have you thought about finances? Can you afford these places without financial aid?
