Any Survivor Watchers?

I was definitely rooting for Owen. I thought Cassidy would win and was shocked Gabler won. He is definitely a character!

I mean, I wasn’t even sure that Gabler was going to be able to walk into tribal council on his own two feet! He was looking pretty scary weak the last couple of days - and mentally drained. Guess that meal the last morning really revived him!!

I didn’t stay up to watch the “reunion” or post winner announcement. I’ll catch that tonight.

Interesting interviews. Here’s Cassidy’s with links to Owen, Jesse, etc also at the beginning of the article:

There is a lot of talk around how awkward and not ok it is to do a “celebration” party IMMEDIATELY after naming the winner. Feelings have to be pretty raw in that space during that final tribal council. Bodies are stinky, tired and hungry. Let them have a shower and a night’s rest and have rehash it with a champagne breakfast in the morning.

I’m ok with Gabler winning. You had the bottom 3 of the final 6 - so that was disappointing. Cassidy simply didn’t play the great game she thought she played in her own mind. So you were on the right side of most votes - who cares? And you thought you orchestrated one of them but oops! you were told otherwise at final tribal council. I just don’t think she had built many strong relationships out there. She was very smirky at the tribals, which the jury could see.
And I loved Owen, but I think he was quiet because he didn’t have anything to say.
And the truth is the jury doesn’t really care about someone winning three individual challenges as opposed to one or even none.
I think Gabler’s likability, verified move in the game and eloquence won him the game.

I think this was another case of editing not showing us the true feelings of the other players. We all liked Owen watching on TV, but obviously the other players did not. Maybe that is why he was so often left out of the strategy.

I like the party immediately afterward, I think they don’t want to risk anything happening between then and the party time (so no vote reading or party in LA anymore).

I think that although she won immunity challenges, Cassidy was perceived as Karla’s shadow, not her own person.

I keep wondering how much will go to the charity - Gabler has to pay taxes on it first (correct!) Hopefully, they get at least 50%.

Once again the strongest 2 of the top 5 don’t make it to the final three (viewed as too much of a threat)

I’m sure the big party costs a small fortune. I think losing on the island would be just as difficult as waiting several months and then losing in front of a large studio audience

I really wish we saw more Ponderosa. It sounds like those that were voted off were still playing the game after they left and that may have swayed the vote.

I’m not talking about a big party. I’m talking about (and this is what the players have said they might prefer) the next day. Right there on the island. But to ask the final three to celebrate on the spot in front of cameras and chat for an hour - after the stress and perhaps disappointment of the finale is well, sort of not considerate!

Not talking about the old tradition of Jeff walking the votes into the California venue!

Also the show has gone from 39 to 26 days. “The Santuary” is much more basic than the last. No Outback Steakhouse spreads. No family flown in. Survivor is a pretty solid show and must have a pretty solid ad base coming in. I think they can afford a big party.

That’s my opinion anyway.

I miss the big finale in LA. Three hours on Wednesday night is too much for me. I liked having the entire cast return, and having more time for the players to rehash the season.

I was shocked it went 7-1 with only one vote for Cassidy! I understand that she didn’t wow the jury but thought it would be closer. I think Karla really poisoned the jury against her (just speculation on my part). Cassidy focused on being on the “right side” of the vote, rather than talking up times she targeted others. She also could have spoken about winning immunity when it was critical.

It is also ridiculous to give so much weight to the fire making. Why on earth should a player with immunity risk everything to make a fire? Wasn’t it more important to get Jesse out?

I felt bad for Jesse, but he also did not win any immunity challenges. I still think he would have won.

Owen was not happy about having to toast a winner moments after getting zero votes and still being stinky and hungry! He said he was trying really hard not to look as sad as Xander looked.

Every production has a budget. They couldn’t fly in family or have the large after party because of COVID protocols. That saved them a decent chunk of change. If you can create a successful show, maintain your viewers and ratings while cutting those costs, why not continue?

I think we actually hear more from the cast the way it is now. The big party had so much extra fluff, interviewing audience members, etc. that less and less time was spent talking to the cast. What I miss is the “What if Jesse won the fire” question. Based on the jury’s reactions, I think they were ready to vote for Jesse and were disappointed when he lost. I don’t think Cassidy had a chance (in the jury’s eyes) regardless of who she brought with her.

On a related note, I wonder how much Amazing Race is saving by not flying private. Will they ever go back to the way it was?

Agreed

I actually miss that. Especially when you have audience members like Sia.

Supposedly, yes. We’ll see

The family (mini) re-unions were tearjerkers, and IMO, far more entertaining than the flashbacks they’ve been incorporating lately. I hope they bring them back.

I also enjoyed seeing family members on the beach.

Also, what was the point of sending them to a new beach at the end?

What I miss is when the finale ran for 2 hours, and the post-show ran for an actual hour—now we don’t learn who the winner is until almost 2. 5hrs have elapsed, leaving a paltry 30 minutes for the post-show.

You know what I don’t miss? Rites of Passage (or whatever they called it) when the final 3 walked past the torches and reminisced about those who were already voted out. That was a waste of time.

Ya know, I never minded that, as I tended to forget some of the contestants who were voted out pre-jury. I agree that they dragged it out too long, though.

What we don’t get with the non-reunion post-show is seeing those pre-jury players. Some of them were interesting but things did not go in their favor. Many were just poor players, though
but they’re still part of Survivor lore.

Remembering all those voted out first

Yeah, I’m glad that the Rites of Passage (and that is, indeed, what it’s called) has been eliminated. That was always a fast forward for me. And I too miss the one hour (or at least 50 minutes, since the vote reading was part of the hour) reunion.

Rites of Passage must have been before I started watching.

I agree that I’d like to see the players voted out before the jury at the end.

I read an interview with Gabler today where he said he didn’t want the others to know his plans for donating his winnings. He didn’t want to win based on that alone.
