Any tips on telling people (advisor, friends) that you're transferring?

Hey CC,

Was wondering if anyone had any tips on telling people on your current campus that you plan to transfer. (Fingers crossed, if all goes well, I'm transferring for Spring 2013).

In particular, I'm worried about telling my academic advisor. I just asked him to be my major advisor about a month ago, and he accepted. He's been wonderful, and I don't want to seem ungrateful for all of the opportunities he's offered.

I'm also nervous about telling my roommate and the girls on my club sports team (I'm captain).

I'd love to hear any tips that you have, or any personal experiences that you have to share. Thanks :)

Bump…I think this is a pretty prevalent/important topic.

Don’t do it until accepted & deposited at another school–although I don’t see any reason to disclose it then.

Agree that you should wait until you are sure you are transferring. After that, people who are your friend and who want the best for you will understand and be happy for you.

Yeah, I definitely agree with that. My parents and I talked about it earlier and they both said not to tell anyone that I applied. But how about once I get the acceptance, if I do get it?
If anyone has any stories about this, I’d like to hear them.
