I am applying to Swat for the Fall 2010 semester and was just curious to know others who applying as well. :)

im applying as a transfer for what will be my sophomore year at swarthmore. there’s not too many of us. i cant wait til May!

Haha, yeah. I really hope there aren’t too many of us Maybe we’ll all get in!

Where are you guys trying to transfer from? I’m at Penn State right now.

dickinson college. its about two hours from philly in carlisle, pa.

Hello fellow transfers,
I am applying for Fall 2010 as a sophomore.
Here wishing us all luck in the coming months.
I hope that you all receive a favorable response from Swarthmore.

I think I’ll try. I currently go to UC Berkeley.
Only on CC will there be a sizable population of wannabe transfers. xP

Do you think there will be a sizable number of transfer applicants this year?

I have wondering, where people who apply to Swarthmore as transfers are trying to transfer from. Are most applicants coming from four year liberal arts institutions, or are most from community colleges/junior colleges. I doubt that it makes much of a difference where one is applying from, it would just be interesting to see the types of students who are applying.

The wait until May for our responses is going to be brutal.

I read somewhere that for fall 2008 there were about 160 transfer candidates and for fall 2009 about 200 so I suspect there will be a few more than that for fall 2010.

I’m applying as a transfer from the U of MN, a large state university. I agree, the wait is gonna be killer, but hopefully I’ll be too busy with schoolwork, ECs, and finals to notice haha

To confirm: midterm grades AREN’T necessary, right…?

Midterm grades aren’t mentioned anywhere on Swarthmore’s website. They do say they want the complete common application and I’m not sure if that includes the midterm grade part. I sent mine. I’d email or call them and ask.

Yup, they do, just responded to my email…

I can’t stand the wait!! :(

I wish I could know now…
Do you know if they send in letters on May 30th only?? I heard May 15th somewhere, but can’t exactly remember where…

on the website, it says may 30th…I expect they’ll probably send them a little earlier though.

where else did you guys apply? are you guys current frosh or sophomores? :)

I’m currently a freshman. woohoo! I didn’t apply anywhere else. I just wanted to try my luck at Swat, since I’ve always felt that it’s the coolest school in the history of cool schools. haha. How about you? I see that you’re trying to transfer from Berkley-- that’s an awesome school. May I ask why you’re looking to Swat?

On another note, anyone else suffering from intense sleep deprivation due to finals week?? The last two weeks are awful.

I can speak to the sleep deprivation.
This is the week before finals week, but all of my classes have final projects due this week and not next. On the bright side though, I do get to leave before finals though because I have no sit downs.

Anyone else dying to hear back from Swarthmore?

Looking for good conversations and small classes. Berkeley doesn’t have much of the latter, and I guess I haven’t yet found a great group of friends for the former. I wouldn’t mind staying at Berkeley now, but last semester was not fun and I’ve always wanted to go to a small liberal arts school…unfortunately my parents were not too supportive of my going out of state. My grandmother even said I’d be better off NOT going to college than moving across the country. I somewhat regret NOT rebelling a little. So if I’m lucky, maybe I’ll get that chance again.

I’ve got two weeks until finals, but I know what you mean. Not looking forward to it!

birdhouse,

While I normally try and not get sucked into these conversations, I too am unbelievably antsy about hearing back from Swarthmore. Incidentally, I work full-time in the Physics Department at UC Berkeley (while going to a local community college), so I completely understand wanting to have smaller, more intellectually engaged classes. What’s your major? What year are you? I do have to say that as you get into the upper division classes, the classes at Berkeley get more intimate, but there is still a noticeable difference between Swarthmore students and classes and Berkeley’s. Berkeley is a wonderful school, but it isn’t for every kind of student.

Best of luck to everyone!

I’m a current frosh, probably will major in History and/or Rhetoric if I stay at Berkeley. Yeah, that’s what everyone tells me, that things will get more intimate when you move into classes in which most people are sincerely interested in the topic, but I can’t help but be irked when they also claim that a class with forty seats is a small one. I still have a lot to learn about taking advantage of Berkeley, though. I think I’m better off in a smaller, more supportive environment - it’s so easy to fall between the cracks. Everything here seems so disorganized and jumbled.

I’m rather curious (though I won’t be offended if you don’t respond) - what do you do at the physics dept? (and full-time?! wow.)

Yea, a “small class” is a fairly relative concept at Berkeley, so I understand your reasoning for wanting to attend a small school where every student and teacher is dedicated and passionate about learning–there is a reason I didn’t apply to such large schools as UCB. However, you hit on something important: “taking advantage of Berkeley”. Certainly there are incredible teachers and students there, it is just a matter of finding them, and that can be tricky. But as you say, it is very easy to fall between the cracks, and it is very easy not find the kind of support that can mold you into the person you could become. To me, Swarthmore is the perfect environment for learning, and that is really what I am after, as it sounds you are too.

I’m not offended at all by your question. It would help to know that I am not a traditional age student. After high school, I had little dedication toward school and floundered in Community College, so I dropped out. But after having lived in the “real world” and doing a number of crazy things, I came to realize how much I love learning and how important it is, so I re-enrolled in Community College with a new found dedication. However, still needing to support myself financially, I continued to work full-time. I have a graphic design background, so most of my work here in the Department deals with designing communications for lectures and events and updating the website, but I am also involved in various administrative areas, such as coordinating the faculty searches and weekly colloquia. It’s a good job, but for me nothing beats studying literature and art with other passionate students.

I think they’re getting close to decision time. I spoke to admissions last week because they were missing my college transcript (just a little important for the decision, right?), and they mentioned that they were wrapping up the review process for transfers. Hopefully we’ll find out soon. Good luck everyone!
