In my sophmore year of highschool i was very apathetic about my grades and just school in general (my mom had breast cancer and i was extremly depressed all year) and i pretty much just did nothing all year, ending up with around a 2.4 total gpa for the year. However, this year I somewhat pulled my **** together and raised my grades nearly a full point and ill be finishing with around a 3.2 and no c's all year (not great by any means but an improvement, my schoool is also extremly competitive and one of the top 5 highest ranked public schools in california). i also got fairly good sats in march(680w, 650v, 700m, retaking in october to hopefully boost to a 2100). My ec's are not very good impressive however (4 years of theatre, preformed in several plays, a couple clubs, i might do a sport next fall to boost this a little). Do I have a shot of getting into many uc's/good csus? The out of state u's I want to apply to are University of Arizona, University of Oregon, and University of Boulder (both parents are alumni), am I being realistic? Are there any other out of state (preferably public but I'm considering privates too) schools I should consider?

I don't think you're a good match for any of the UCs because of your low GPA. I think you will have a good shot at Arizona State University though because some girl from my school got in with a 2.8 GPA. CSU's might also be a match.

"ill be finishing with around a 3.2 and no c's all year (not great by any means but an improvement"

the glass is half full and any improvment is great...upward trend says a lot, and you kind of had a reason to do not so great...

yeah i know getting into any uc otherthan merced would be a huge reach, i just put that in case anyone had any experiences where a student similar to me got into a uc, im mainly wondering about csu's and the out of states I listed, plus any others people want to suggest. ive looked at asu and would consider it but it has a reputation of being a school for complete idiots so i dunno

bump for more answerS?

newsnm:

could i get into ithaca?

Fortunately, your life isn't over yet- and UCs are definitely not out of the question. Personal "trauma" can be a big factor, and the difference between going to a UC and a CSU can be student body caliber. This isn't a slight to the CSUs, but if you feel you have much greater potential than you are presenting, then look to the UCs. Santa Cruz, Riverside, Merced, even Davis-- go for it. You can petition waitlists or even rejections- I have a friend who did and will probably be going to Santa Cruz- sort of similar situation, upward trend, started most ECs Sr year after he got over apatheticness and frustration with math. Not all UCs are cutthroat- and U of O is, IMO, even prettier than any of the UC campuses. Applying from out-of-state you need higher than their instate GPA requirements, but work hard your senior year and see what comes. If you feel you need somewhere nurturing and interesting- I'm not sure what kind of learner you are- check out the CTCL's because there are a lot of schools receptive to people who didn't get it all together in high school but will apply themselves and succeed in college. Anyhow-- don't lose faith, because UCs aren't out yet!! (Everything balances out- my cousin had a 1200ish SAT and is at UCB now- so nothing can truly "hurt" you- she was EIC of her school NP and regional prez of NFTY, 3 yr waterpolo/swim, but a lower SAT doesn't ruin your life just like lower grades doesn't)

Also- check out Humboldt and Sonoma State. Smaller student bodies, more residential, lower entrance requirements than UCs. Your SAT will be more impressive there and they have amazing campuses.

Like I Said Again. Whats your rank not your GPA. Your GPA does not matter, its your rank.

my school is very competitive and dosent rank
